No I am not exaggerating I go to a state school .(Original post by Jack22031994)
You're one of few very clever lucky people though
Like there was that 4 year old who got into Mensa and that 8 year old whi got an. A at A level maths
Overall gcses are good and better than o levels, kids have got clever along with teaching not exams getting easier

Just been reported by the BBC, do you think that these and the A-Level changes will go ahead or not? -
Re: GCSEs are scrapped
My teacher once showed me a Maths O-level text book from the 70's
It had literally half of what is now in maths a level in it.
In my opinion, I think the universities should control the exams, not random companies trying to make as much money as possible, but actual academic institutes which makes sense. -

Re: GCSEs are scrapped
Reading people's responses, seems that I am the only one somewhat happy about this. Let's face it, there were too many GCSEs that were piss easy, not only that but gcses based entirely on CW will never match up to exams, sorry; get over it. Our standards are low let's be honest, we're Britain, we should be up that if not leading, this they say will make that a reality and if it doea bear fruit than sweet but our parents, their parents, sat these O-Levels; all I know is that they were hard and a return to the old ways is great, knowing that tradition will be coming back, okay many of missed that boat but our kids won't. O-Levels are the way forward. And for those asking what of GCSEs now, I'm pretty sure they won't just lose value so quit worrying.
Hope I don't get too many negs but this news is honestly brillant and yes, I've sat GCSEs and my A-Levels this summer, good luck all! -
Re: GCSEs are scrapped
You'll have to forgive them, the daily mail is a little behind on these things. You see, to them it's the 1st of April tomorrow.
I'm not contributing to their ad revenue, but if they have a metric ****-tonne of bull**** about exams being easy I will personally hunt down every person who contributed to, proofread and apporved of the story and shove my maths tree down their throat until they vomit calculus. Maybe then they will understand that maybe they should stop pretending to be agrown up newspaper and change their front cover from black to red....
/rant.
Oh yeah, maths tree, see pic. I put the calc on there for comparison. (sorry it's sideways).

Re: GCSEs are scrappedOK, I think you may have a point. So a coursework element is probably helpful. Fair enough. I was thinking at more of an advanced academic level, but your right, not all students taking O Levels can work well under pressure, but they will still be taking O Levels. In the end, I do believe that exams should be the major component of almost any subject, since they will in the end be the best indicator of ability (ability which, to reiterate, would still be the result of hard work as well as 'natural intelligence').(Original post by Funtry)
I love exams, I work well under pressure, it's just that many people don't. Most people don't want to be journalists or engineers; they want to be something else, so is it fair for the to do one exam at the end to cater to those types?
As for the point about the differences between a modular system or not, I am in favour of having one set of exams at the end of the course, rather than constant exam pressure throughout. Honestly, I think the problem of someone under performing in all there exams just because they are taken at one time instead of at two times is greatly exaggerated. People often under perform in early exams because they aren't as prepared. I take the Pre-U as an alternative to an A Level in one of my subjects (physics) and I believe that the extra time when I don't have public exams is helpful, and there is at least as much to be gained from that as there is to be lost from the rather small threat of some freakily poor performance in an exam affecting results. -
Re: GCSEs are scrapped
To be honest this should have been done a while ago and its clear that gcse's are failing but all this is going to cost money which really doesnt need to be spent. Personally there should be a new style of examination where you can do a max of four exams per subject and you get say a max of 4 retakes

It wouldn't be a "revolution" as you call it as it would be going back to the past(Original post by blue_cross)
Good! But education is not the only thing that needs a revolution in this ruined country of ours.

Re: GCSEs are scrappedWhoa. Not saying I did. And I honestly have no idea. My school was full of idiots who thought they were big.(Original post by SpiggyTopes)
They didn't at mine!
But why? It's not as though a teenage German has any king of responsibility for WWI and WWII. Don't be so harsh! -
Re: GCSEs are scrapped
Oh **** off.
Top down top down top down top down.
Every time they overhaul the system, they're screwing over a whole year group who have to adapt to the new system making their life more difficult, compared to the previous yeargroup who get teachers vastly experienced in the current system, not to mention access to resources, books, past papers etc.
Did they consider that?
How about, if there's a problem with GCSEs, move to a gradual solution, rather than "hurr durrrp big media storm we're gonna OVERTHROW aint that exciting vote 4 me".
Out of touch much.
