Should I take history
Well i've done my GCSEs ans haven't decided what to do for A-levels yet. I was thinking of History because I'm good at it. For two years now I've rarely lost more than two RAW marks, my UMS is always full.
However next year the subjects we're studying aren't ones that interest me in the slightest. For GCSEs it was cold war, and world war2 etc. For A levels it's Germnay and Russia in 1870 and Britain's loss of it american colonies.
So basically, shall i take it? My other option will be Physics if i don't take history along with maths, further maths, chemistry. I may want to go into medicine or maths when i'm older.
I'm good at the subject, but will have no motivation for it. Is it worth it?
Also can history actually get me anywhere? Or is it better off for me to take physics? I'm not going to become a history teacher or anythng. -
Re: Should I take history
Yes. History is great for teaching you to analyise, argue and explain in detail, it also helps your writing skills which helps you in loads of other subjects.
History also helps your general knowledge of world events, modern history helps you helps you understand current affairs better
I love history it's been my faviourite subject and would have referred not taking it. -
Re: Should I take history
oh... well that puts me to stage one again... Now i don't know which one to pick again

Does a gcse in history show that i acquired other skills? What about mma? Or do they like it to be shown academically at AS?
History is my fave subject now, but next year because of the syllabus it won't be, so i won't really like it much, i'll just be good at it (like I am at physics...). -
Re: Should I take historyYes, but its really ALevels they're interested, unis know obviously your GCSES arent all gonna be science- based, i mean on one hand i know someone who is doing maths, chemistry, biology and physics and hopes to do medicine- however she said the workload is crazy and its quite difficult. But my sister who hopes to do medicine is doing the three sciences and english, and she said that from her experience- having a fourth essay based subject is brilliant as you are not bored to death with science and calculations- which may i add are supposed to be very difficult at ALevel however my sister very much enjoys physics. My cousin and my friend are doing; biology, chemistry, maths and history so to be honest as said before i would go for history. As it seems to me that the majority of people i know are showing unis their ability to analyse situations, and show that they can write well too, on a level above the GCSE.(Original post by user1-4)

Re: Should I take historyalright thanks, i'll go for history i guess but before i do, i need to find out. If you do things like mma, does that I have other skills? If so it doesn't then matter what my fourth choice is does it?(Original post by sophie5)

Re: Should I take historyyh, i just did my GCSEs.(Original post by sophie5)

mma is mixed martial arts. Um.. well it's what you do in cage fighting, but don't think about cavemen fighting. It's the technique behind it and the jiu-jitsu and wrestling that requires skill (and knowledge of technique after technique) to pull off at the right moment... Although if people don't know about it, i guess I'll have a hard time explaining it in an interview without looking like some cagefighting ****
P.S. I don't do any cagefighting -
Re: Should I take historyOh right yeah i have my last GCSE on friday too- just to let you know im hoping to do history next year for alevel.(Original post by user1-4)
yh, i just did my GCSEs.

MMA sounds like an extracurricular activity so i dont really think unis would see that as being academically different- but im not sure. My advice to you would be wait and see what you get in your GCSEs first and then make your choice

Re: Should I take history
Be warned that history is the hardest A-level I did. It's a lot of content and a lot of structure practice. Just because you were good at GCSE doesn't mean you're going to be automatically good at A-level. Especially if it doesn't interest you. It'll drain all the life out of you if you don't like it.
They won't give a crap about martial arts. They mean academic skill.(Original post by user1-4)

They can do one man!
In regards to the rest of your post, i guess i'll have to take that into consideration too. If i am really bored after a few weeks of it i guess i'll just drop it.Last edited by user1-4; 21-06-2012 at 11:52. -

. What you want to study at a higher level - medicine
. Personal interest - and not just for the topics you're studying next year, I mean the whole concept of history, basically do you enjoy studying the past - this should also, I think, transcend whether or not you do well in it to an extent - no point in studying something if you hate it/find it boring but do well in it...
Sad as it makes me to say it (because history is the best subject
) If I were you I'd probably go with Physics - you want a job either in medicine or maths, and all your other subjects are geared toward that, physics will only complement those topics and possibly help you develop your mathmatical knowledge further. Aside from this, there is nothing stopping you from studying history at a higher level later on in life if you find yourself interested in it again, either with the OU, or just by reading history books
so yeah, go with Physics.

It really depends on a couple of factors:-

alright thanks. That was invaluable.
Overall i don't really mind history, some things i like, some i don't. Physics i sort of hate... But find it easy (just like history). I only hate physics though because some things i feel are a load of specualtion (was going to be a different word there).
I'll see my induction day with history and if i don't like it (in any way what so ever i.e. i get an excuse not to like it) then i'll do physics. -
Re: Should I take historyIt's the same for everyone in every subject(Original post by user1-4)

- for me and history it's the 20th Century I hate... over and over it's either about economics (which I dont care about and have no interest in) or OMG THE NAZIS WERE BAD!!1!!!!!!1!!!... yeah... I get it... I was taught/indoctrinated into that at school...then again at A Level...then again at uni in year 1... Year 2 at uni is probably the first time I'm going to be doing a history course without the bloody Nazis... thank God.
I'll be honest though if you hate physics then why do it? Yeah you can find it easy but what motivation will you have to study it if you hate it?... If you still want to do a science but cant stand physics then why not do Biology? That's probably more important arguably to medicine than Physics
-
Re: Should I take historyI haven't chosen Biology because i'm not exactly how it goes in the school but i was told i'll probably end up doing biology anyway. It's because i chose maths + further maths. I think i do one in one year and so i will be doing biology anyway or something. I can't remember, but at first i chose biology and i was told to think of another subject.(Original post by TheHistoryStudent)

That left me to have to think between Physics and History. -
Re: Should I take history
Russian history is a lot more interesting than you might imagine - which period are you covering? I did the last three tsars to Stalin for my AS History, and that was lovely.
History is awesome at giving you transferable skills - analysis, evaluation, essay writing & structure. Some bits are a bit boring, but it can be a lot of fun. And it definitely shows you have other interests beside medicine/science things, which is always a plus.
because i was taking the pi$$ out of them for having to cope with two more years of physics
