Re: Why is it hard to get a part time job ffs?i'm in the same boat as you!! in terms of looking for a receptionist/secretary type job. i'm probably signed up to about 10 different job websites (at first i was worried about having my details on so many diff websites, some of which may have been dodgy) and i used to apply for jobs everyday but its so difficult! especially cos i havent got that much experience and most company's will only hire people with minimum of like 2 years experience! i've given up! im not trying to be negative or anything, but since february i've been applying for jobs and still nothing!(Original post by Millie228)
What are considered to be the best webpages for part time employment?
I detest those pages where you just have to register your CV and info in their register. There is always some problems with filling it in
I prefer a simple job ad webpage where you contact the company directly with an application (on your own).
Most people tell me that if you want something business related (even secretary/receptionist at a company) at a remotely good salary, connections is the only way.
But while I'm waiting for older friends to help me out, I'll have to apply as much as possible...
its worse now that most students are on holiday, so far more people are applying for jobs! i'm just hoping something comes up soon or else im screwed for the summer -
Re: Why is it hard to get a part time job ffs?I'm mainly looking to work from September, obviously if I do get something I'll start in the summer, but ideally two times a week while I'm studying (if I get a proper job at a firm, I can ask my school to work my timetable around it - they're flexible if it's a job in business, but not if it's in retail or anything like that).(Original post by AYO)

I agree with you, but I think Deziah has a point for certain positions. Let's say you're hiring at McDonalds and a university student (from a good school), delivers their CV. Maybe not even directly applies, just drop of their CV, and you clearly understand it's something he/she does to be open to absolutely everything. At McDonalds they have next to no requirements and they are used to people throwing in their CV "just in case". If the student is from a good institution, it is more than likely that s/he will drop the job as soon as s/he finds something better. You're better off with someone who is likely to stay there a while.
But of course I agree that A-levels/uni students generally cannot make the assumption that they're not hired due to being 'overqualified' or whatever.
Don't really think this is the case tbh, I work in McDonald's the now, and most of the part time people are students of some sort, including things like medicine, law, Maths, physics, dentistry etc. I'm currently doing engineering. I think our manager actually like hiring people that he perceives as clever. Gives them a bit of an easier life. It's near enough impossible to get a job cause there's so many people going for so few vacancies. It sucks, but that's just the way it is, I suppose. -
Re: Why is it hard to get a part time job ffs?No I'm with Blue Arrow agency, if your going to sign up for an agency it's best to go to their office and register there. They get to many emails with CV's, best to go see them in person..(Original post by Millie228)
You mean adecoo found the job for you?
I've gone through numerous webpages, but nobody has positions for 1 or 2 days a week.. I'm mainly looking for secretary, receptionist etc. -

What are the rules for work and taxes for students in the UK? I am not a UK citizen, and back home there is a maximum amount of money you can make during a year without paying taxes. -
Re: Why is it hard to get a part time job ffs?Good luck with those jobs you applied for. As for the taxes, it works the same here. You need to be earning a certain amount to be paying taxes, as your a student you won't need to pay any tax. However for your first few paydays they may tax you because you may be on a emergency tax code, you can claim that money back easily though. You shouldn't be taxed though. Good luck.(Original post by Millie228)

Re: Why is it hard to get a part time job ffs?
Email a CV and covering letter to all the businesses in your area, hotels, holiday parks etc. even if they aren't advertising vacancies, and put in the letter your availability. If you're willing to work anywhere with accommodation, then obviously apply everywhere for residential jobs. Check the DirectGov job search website, and local newspapers and notice boards.
Also make use of any contacts, like friends or relatives that are working in companies you could find a job with, get them to put in a good word or mention the fact that you're looking for work and are going to send a CV to them soon, it does help sometimes.
A lot of it is just luck though, unfortunately.Last edited by Antifazian; 24-06-2012 at 21:08. -
Re: Why is it hard to get a part time job ffs?
Not really on topic, but there's this one person I know who keeps getting part time jobs, decides they don't want them anymore and then quits in order to have more time free, and then goes looking for one when they decide they need to get a job.
And finds one. Every single time.
I have no idea how they do it. -
Re: Why is it hard to get a part time job ffs?if they earn over the personal allowance they will have to pay tax whether they are a student or not. students are not exempt from tax.(Original post by johnnyavfc)

Re: Why is it hard to get a part time job ffs?Independent businesses are probably your best bet, as they are generally less well known and therefore you probably won't have as many applicants to compete with. My friend has been looking for a job for months, and she was told by our local Tesco that they have stopped accepting applications (either for advertised jobs or unsolicited CVs) as they get about 150 applications each month, even when there are no jobs advertised. They are really overstaffed, as are most 'popular' places to work, e.g. Waterstones, Boots, Greggs, Parsons, local sweet shops etc. So the rule is, if you don't mind applying for any job that comes available, no matter what it is, then you're probably better off!
