Is this stupid?
Discussion for GCSE students, including those studying for IGCSEs and O Levels.

Re: Is this stupid?
You have no idea of the syllabus or what you need to know in order to do well so it's perfectly possible that all the work you'll do will be no help at all.
That seems pretty stupid to me, especially if you wear out your work motivation in summer and can't be bothered during term time.
If I were you, I'd doss about during the summer holidays seeing as you don't know what you're doing and instead work during the christmas/easter breaks when you do know what you're supposed to be learning. -
Re: Is this stupid?
It's perfectly possible to teach yourself A levels over the summer. They're not that hard to self-teach. My problems would be: (a) I'd have to learn most of the stuff again by the time the exams came round; and (b) I'd waste my summer.
Of course, you're probably just talking about learning as a supplement to the work you'll do at sixth form. In that case, my quarrel would be that there's no point. You don't really need to work from September, let alone from June. There's just not enough content to make it worthwhile.
If you're time's really not worth much to you and you find the content really difficult, fair enough. But if both of those conditions aren't satisfied, don't bother pre-reading for A levels. You've got ages to learn when you're supposed to.
Now, if you want to do something "productive" with your time, educate yourself on something you won't get an opportunity to learn in an institutional setting. Read some classical literature or some philosophy or something. Or get a job. Or take up some exciting hobby like skydiving... possibly with funds from your possible job. The possibilities really are endless. -
Re: Is this stupid? As far as I can see, nobody else feels that way, you do. If its so stupid, best advice would be you shouldn't have bother commenting. I'm not trying to gloat, I'm actually asking others what they think of this which is why the title is 'is this stupid?' because I want to know what others think about it.(Original post by willbee)
And the way you gleefully say "Prepared for the negs" suggests you're simply using this forum as a way to gloat "I'm better than you, I'm not stupid at all".
To which I say: stupid thread, stupid point, stupid little GCSE student.
You clearly failed to understand the concept of my question. -
Re: Is this stupid?Yeah need to go visit whsmith soon(Original post by AspiringGenius)
I would get the textbooks for the correct exam boards and flick through them, just to get your head around what the topics are, and then you can organise for the year ahead. Oter than that, I wouldn't advise any further study.

lol.
To be fair, I think I understood the purpose of your question better than you did. You weren't asking people for their own opinions, you were asking them to reinforce your own.
But I digress, I think you should try getting a job this summer if you have nothing else to do. Studying is great (although somewhat nonsensical pre-A-levels imo), but if you can get a job then you can do something even more worthwhile with your time. You will get more fulfilment from it (trust me, you will), and you will earn money (thus have money) and you will get work experience which is just as important (if not more) as grades are and schooling. Plus given the current climate for getting jobs, it is probably best to try getting one now (maybe waiting / pot-washing at your local pub) because employers won't expect you to have already got work experience at your age. If you wait until after A-levels, you'll be looking for employment against people the same age and same grades but also who have work experience.
I don't know where you live either, but many places will have more jobs going in the summer because the holidays means more business for lots of pubs and restaurants, and then there may be tourism or whatever if you live near a holiday destination. Or if you live in the city, they'll be lots of jobs to apply for (because there always are in cities).
Feel free to ignore all my advice again, and only reply to a tiny bit which disgruntles you.

I'm also doing French AS in September, and I want a head start but I don't know what to do? Can you PM me so we don't go off topic(Original post by Deziah)
It really depends. If you're planning on studying for hours a day, like when we were revising for our GCSEs, then it's not really advisable. You run the risk of learning it wrong, and you really should grant yourself some freedom. After all, I doubt we are going to have much in September. ;D
But, I guess you can't go wrong with a bit here and there. I'm going to be doing French in September, so I'm just going to go over all my grammar and tenses, make sure they're good. I also started doing a-level maths a year early, so I'll just go over everything my teacher taught me.
Preparation is good. Trying to self-teach isn't. ;D
Thanks : )

Re: Is this stupid?
I think it's a good time to relax, but if you're getting really bored then I don't see what the problem is with having a look at some A-Level stuff. Or at least consolidating some of the harder GCSE stuff.
I'm reading ahead on a few of my A-Levels; definitely Maths, Politics and Chemistry but probably not history. For Maths I'll just take a look at some of C1 and C2 as to help me in AS, Chemistry we've been set mandatory work from school anyway and Politics I'm just reading a few books to get me started (which was something I wanted to do anyway).
Take up some hobbies as well as learning content if you're bored, though. I'm going to be learning guitar (hopefully
), have a reading list as long as my arm and want to watch plenty of tv shows/films. Hopefully will be going to a few parties as well as going on holiday, too.

Re: Is this stupid?Re-reading your GCSE revision guides/notes once or twice wouldn't hurt I suppose. If you still want a head start perhaps get the Head start to AS *enter subject here* from CGP Books; it focuses on some of the harder GCSE concepts and concepts learnt earlier in the year at AS so could be of some benefit.(Original post by Safiya122)
I've come to realise many GCSE members of TSR find it quite insane when some other TSR members, alongside I, admitted that we were going to get a head start of A-levels but now I wan to know the debate as to why it's a good idea - from others besides myself - and why some think it's not.
My first reason at this moment in time, is because the weather has been rubbish in England, and so I feel there's really nothing 'exciting' for me to do now that my early summer has begun. I feel I spent my time on the IPad searching away or simply watching MTV. I feel like I should do something worth while if I find myself free everyday waking up at a time I please knowing that I'm not really scheduled to do anything..
But I just wanted to point out that those students who do decide to take a proactive approach to A-levels are not stupid because I really don't think a stupid person would even take a proactive approach, not really anyways.
Prepared for the negs
If that isn't quenching your thirst to learn then you could always read around the subject? Interested in Physics? Read A Brief History of Time - Stephen Hawking.
Enrichment is probably more beneficial than learning the syllabus before the course starts.
I have read over my GCSE books but apart from that I've volunteered, done part time work, worked out, played on the xbox, read popular science books and slept. It's actually heaven.
EDIT: The rest of my time is spent procrastinating on TSR and FacebookLast edited by Occams Chainsaw; 16-07-2012 at 01:31. -
Re: Is this stupid?I've been given some summer work and I'm doing a bit extra as well, not only to get ahead but also cause it's good for me as a person to get lots done, stops me sitting around all day watching tv! ;D(Original post by Safiya122)

If you want to do extra work, go for it! I envy you for your proactiveness, ahah ;P -
Re: Is this stupid?Lol you make me laugh. Why would what seems to be trolling disgruntle me? It makes me laugh. You clearly dont understand the purpose of my question, never mind better than me. The whole point of this post was not for people to reinforce my idea, it was so I could get their opinion, and I certainly got yours which I was never ignoring..feel free to lie about something else(Original post by willbee)

if all I was doing was hoping for more people to back up my post (and there was few), then I wouldn't have actually created the thread with such a question..it would be more like 'reason as to why I think I want to study in the summer holidays.' on top of this, if you actually read my post, it says says I want to know why people would agree with me beside my pointers and why others wouldn't, so no like I said, you don't know what the heck the intentions of this thread really are, otherwise I doubt you would think this thread was pointless.
But seriously if you're like the other user and think this post is boring then don't post! The fact that you're posting is clearly saying something else..don't worry your thought of my thread will not hurt me.Last edited by Safiya122; 23-07-2012 at 23:37.
