Re: What ruling system do you believe in?
Because of your list, democracy is the one I have the least problems with. Any system under which the people are ruled over without consent is in my view an illegitimate institution. In a dictatorship the people have no say, nor in an oligarchy or a traditional monarchy. In a theocracy policy is informed through religion which is based on information received through divine revelation, which is possibly the poorest way of understanding the world we have, and a feudal system is essentially a de-centralised dictatorship. Of course in a democracy people could vote for any of these systems, which hints at one of the problems of democracy - you can't expect everyone to understand matters of politics - but at least the people will have consented to be governed rather than being outright exploited. Unless they have been tricked.

Re: What ruling system do you believe in?
Unlike many people, I see democracy as a means to an end, rather than something to be achieved for its own sake. It forces the government to listen to the people, but a good government would be doing that anyway regardless of whether or not it was elected. I'd say the best possible form would be a benevolent dictatorship, but since it's hard to make sure that the dictator stays benevolent then democracy is the best option which is likely to work.

Free for all;no law,no nothing. Survival of the fittest.
Under current civilisation, the weak survive and pass on their defects, essentially allowing evolution to happen in reverse. Over time humans will be left with a joke of a gene pool, with everyone having disorders, etc.
Im just trying to convey the fact that in nature,e.g. A deer with poor eyesight will not survive, those with good vision avoid predators so have kids with good eyesight, etc. Over time with increasing prominence of asthma, diabetes, etc in population, when a big event occurs where we can no longer rely on our technology,we'd be ****ed.
All this should be a reason genetic engineering should be encouraged,to counteract these problems and to evolve into superhumans
Btw,i hope i don't sound like a nazi or something! Im asthmatic myself!
But in terms of political system...democracy.

Survival of the fittest doesn't advance our society, it just improves our chances of not being eaten by monsters. If only the fittest survive then most of our technology wouldn't exist because a lot of our scientists (Stephen Hawking comes to mind) wouldn't qualify and we'd still be in the Dark Ages. -
Re: What ruling system do you believe in?Republic is a very wide term, and sometimes the line between a republic and a monarchy becomes blurred. Take America as an example - when you consider all the traditions and ceremonies surrounding the US President, the sacrosanctity of their person, and their power to issue executive orders, the only difference between the President and an elected monarch is the title of the office.(Original post by CandyFlipper)
None of the above, I support a constitutional republic.
There have been many examples throughout history of nominal republics behaving like monarchies (North Korea, Venice, the Roman Empire) and many examples of constitutional monarchies behaving like republics (Britain, Denmark, Athens). It's really not a good way to categorize political systems, not when we've got terms like "presidential" or "parliamentary", "democratic" or "authoritarian" that do a far better job at describing how the country is run rather than the ideology of the people who founded it. -
Re: What ruling system do you believe in?
Broadly, I'd say Democracy.
However, I'm pessimistic as to whether democracy would work in countries where the poplace are poor, uneducated and vulnerable to populist acts by a corrupt elite and there is little accountability, and a lack of institutions. For example, I can't see democracy being succesful somewhere like Somalia, as there would doubtless be election rigging and other corrupt practices (e.g threats/bribes to communities in order for them to back a particular leader). I imagine in such countries, some sort of 'benevolent leader' who could be put in place for the long term to get a country stable, growing, and to raise educational standards, and set up appropriate and legitimate institutions (rule of law, property rights etc) would be the best for the country, rather than electing a leader.Last edited by FDR; 23-06-2012 at 17:03. -
