Re: Race for life...sexist?
in a patriachal society, women do need spaces where they can avoid feeling like they're being oggled at and objectified. some women find running in front of men a nerve racking experience because it feels like they're being judged. this provides a safe space for them to run in comfort. until women aren't systematically objectified i don't see the problem with this.

I had the same thought when I volunteered at it last year. I thought race for life was for breast cancer with all the pink and that was why but it is raising money for cancer research so everyone should be able to enter. I'm not sure how they are allowed to do it. Surely they would raise more money if they allowed men to enter too...
If it is because women don't like running in front of my because the men are going to me looking at them then they could have a separate men's only race but to be fair to most guys I doubt they would run the race for life just to stare at women, they can still go along and watch the women's only race for life so they can stare at women running there anyway. I assume most will be running to raise money in honor/memory of their loved ones with cancer.

Re: Race for life...sexist?there are many many many many other races that are mixed. you can run those races without making women who want a comfortable environment feel uncomfortable.(Original post by JoeBiden)
I wanted to do the race for life. What about all the guys out there who want who want to jog for freedom/their loved ones.
it's bullcrap. -
Re: Race for life...sexist?But they allow men to watch them from the side lines? at least if the men are running they will be focused on something else.(Original post by SquaredCircle)

that there were v few men in the crowd.just a few sitting in chairs or cheering someone on. -
Re: Race for life...sexist?yes. 10-20 men is v few in the race compared to the number of men supporting in the mixed races.(Original post by slylee)
Does it matter? 10-20 guys staring as women run past in slow motion with boobs bouncing vs 100-200 men running trying to keep focused? -
Re: Race for life...sexist?I still think its sexist to ban men just because we're apprantly sex starved hound dogs, if women assume men will be undressing them with their eyes, they need to grow up.(Original post by SquaredCircle)
yes. 10-20 men is v few in the race compared to the number of men supporting in the mixed races.
I can understand if it was for any other reason but cancer attacks anyone it wants, excluding a gender for a "comfortable enviroment" is bs. -
Re: Race for life...sexist?Well according to race for lifes website, it's for every type of cancer, which makes even less sense as to why men are banned.(Original post by geetar)
Yeah, I think it's wrong to let only women race, as a) men can get breast cancer too, and b) they'll be affected if a female friend or relative develops it. -
Re: Race for life...sexist?hahahahaha, a man telling how to tell a women how to feel in the face of systemic objectification and harassment. bit rich.(Original post by slylee)

Re: Race for life...sexist?What is your problem? you're apprantly a man but sit on your high horse defending women that don't want to be defended in the first place. Obviously you grew up protected and sheltered and took it upon yourself to become the white knight women so desperately need.(Original post by SquaredCircle)

Re: Race for life...sexist?not at all. it's hilarious when i get accused of being a white knight. as if i haven't spent about a year reading feminist literature. grow up dude, stop psychoanalysing people over the internet.(Original post by slylee)

i'm not defending women. i'm explaining why women want safe places. a lot of women do feel vulnerable around men when they go to the gym. when they run. etc. if you don't want to understand this that's your problem but it is what it is.
giving them a safe space to run, albeit with men scattered around the run, is not a bad thing. -
Re: Race for life...sexist?I agree with this. And whilst my femisit sisters may berate me for this, I'm pretty sure I'm ok with mild sexism (which is essentially what it is) if it's to raise money for a charity like cancer research. Tell me I'm wrong, but in the grand scheme of things, I think cancer trumps the chaps feeling a tad put out that they cannot don their dapper pink tweeds and go for a jolly good amble round the park with the dames.(Original post by rlw31)
I really don't see what the controversy is. Marketing it this way has made it a very profitable event for the charity as it has galvanised people to raise money for the charity. -
