Re: University help
hello there my name is Kostas and i am a second year student at University for the Creative Arts Film Production Course, working part-time for UCA answering questions on student forums. I am a mature student and i can highly recommend this University for the course you are looking for.
i will give you a rough description of the course. In the first year you will learn the basic aspects of film making by studying theory as well as creating two projects in the course of the year. The first project is documentary based and is called portraits. It is shot and edited digitally by a group of people. The other practical project is called first film and is shot in 16mm and edited on actual film which not a lot of universities do these days. Great experience.
The second year has two major projects apart from theory modules
one is a super 16mm film based on facts that you and a group develop with the second being a documentary project shot digitally. You are also given the chance to create an experimental video project called the other cinema you can check some videos my year produced http://vimeo.com/groups/othercinema
The third year has two major projects shot in whatever format you desire since this is the only project that you self fund (apart from the desired equipment if they are available) some people rent out from external companies a red camera which rises the budget.
It has a great equipment office where you can rent equipment almost immediately if they are available and an excellent library,.
The tutors are always helpful with your projects and unbiased and give you the necessary tools to initiate yourself evolution inside and outside the course.
The only issue is actually the town itself which is kind of slow and quiet, but if you are focused on your studies you can always help and create other projects. This is an art university meaning you will meet people and actually help and get help in your films if you socialize and are good at your work
i have created ads/music videos and video art installations with students from the university. In addition to that the equipment is updated and blazingly fast and the it is always helpful

Re: University help
hello there sorry about the delayed response we had some trouble logging in to the student room.
Now back to your question. The portfolio is a way to make sure that people prove their interest about filmaking. It shouldn't make you anxious instead you should embrace it and be creative.Shoot with whatever camera you have(including mobile) edit with whatever software you have (windows movie maker, imovie) and don't just concentrate on films. Film making is a broad experience so you can put drawings or short stories you might have written, photography work and whatever creative skill you might have.
I apologise again for the delayed response
