Re: work experience 2013 applicants
A tiny amount compared to some people I have seen but here goes
1 week equine vets
1 week riding stables
1 week lambing
2 weeks small animal vets
1 week animal management unit (reptiles, chickens, llamas etc. they even had otters =D)
2 weeks lambing and pigs

3 days helping at my stable yard
I have also booked for summer
1 week small animal referral practice
1 week city farm
1 week large animal vets
1 day equine/canine physiotherapist
1 or 2 days with farrier -
Mine seems really pathetic too

1 week small practice
1 week mixed practice
1 week dairy
1 week kennels/cattery
1 week riding stables (but have been riding every week since I was 5)
1 week aquatics
1 week exotics
3 days mixed farm work (sheep and lambs, cattle, pigs)
7 days lambing

Re: work experience 2013 applicants
2 weeks small animal rescue shelter
3 weeks small animal vet (two different places)
1 week companion animal farm
1 week mixed farm (mostly pigs)
2 weeks dairy
1 week lambing
1 week mixed vet (80% of the time was farm/equine, though)
1 year volunteering weekly at riding stables
1 month volunteering twice weekly at riding for the disabled stables
1 year volunteering weekly at cattery in animal rescue shelter
Planned
4.5 week research project at RVC
8 days London Zoo
1 week LA vet
But it's all very well listing weeks and places and stuff, but at the end of the day it's not the number of weeks, so long as that's above the uni requirements, but it's what you've taken from them. -

They are running a paid-for course called Zoo Academy, which is a combination of theory and practical stuff focusing on different animal groups. I can't waitIm sure London Zoo stopped doing work experience at the end of 2011?

Re: work experience 2013 applicantsI don't know where abouts you live but Bristol zoo do free work experience. I did it for 2 weeks last Easter. It was fantastic! I saw so many operations on exotic animals, and helped to carry out post mortems. I'd highly recommend it if you can. Re: work experience 2013 applicants
Ohhhh my goodness.
Just looking at everyones experience I still don't feel I have enough.
I looked at a thread last year and pushed the boat out to get more, and I thought I'd done good until I saw this thread.
Unis also look at what you learnt from experience. A lecturer told me on an open day,
''It's about what YOU want to get out of the experience. We will look more favourably on people who have spent one week somewhere but asked a lot of questions and got involved, over someone who has spent a year there but only cleaned up.''
(tried to get variety over quantity)
Couldn't get lambing work anywhere so here's what I have so far:
2 Weeks companion animal vets (1 at each of two different surgeries)
1 Week pet shop
1 Week animal sanctuary assistant (farm and domestic animals)
1 day every two weeks for six months at a Livestock Market
5 Weeks bird sanctuary assistant
2 Weeks at a Zoo
1 Week exotic vet
1 Week Vet specialising in Equine
Hopefully will get in some volunteering with rspca but ATM they have no space for more volunteers.
Also applied for position in a laboratory, should hear back soon.
I'm also going to put things about my 4 other volunteering positions that aren't animal related as well as hobbies.
Do you think I have a strong application? -
