1(a) (ii) Is tRNA which would have a U.

Mind went blank for the essay! Didnt write ANYTHING about DNA or receptors.
    Only wrote about:

    Transcriptional factors
    Ribosomes
    Joints
    Enzymes + Inhibitors
    Plasma membrane

Possible to get 10/16 from that?

Just to add to the discussion, I have put together an unofficial answer scheme but the file is too big to upload. Please note that alternative answers may still get marks and I have not covered the essay questions. My answers are not definitive and probably will not all hit all the rigid AQA markscheme.

The pdf can be downloaded from my public drop box here:

Just realised you had to fill it in ON the boxes so it doesnt matter which order you answer them in!

It's hard to say what you'll get without seeing your essay, your marks aren't just based on what topics you have covered. The first thing the examiner will do is to read through the essay and decide if it is bad (2 marks), poor (6 marks), average (8 marks), good (12 marks) or excellent (16 marks). You can only get those marks and nothing in-between, so you couldn't actually get 10 marks anyway. Next they will look more closely at the essay and make a definite decision on what your mark in that category will be.

Nope! You just wrote the answer the wrong way around on the mark scheme but on the paper it had to be filled in on the boxes so its fine!!

I thought it would fluoresce in this case because the fluorescent gene was added alongside the Factor XI rather than being disrupted by its insertion?
noo, it meant 'with' not side by side'. gene markers dont work that way !

actually we can get all even numbers from 0 to 16 on the essay :3, we cant get odd numbers for scientific content
10 for content is possible, if the examiner decides its better than average but not quite good enough to be good :3

Thanks for that, when looking over the mark scheme I was under the impression that you could only get 0,2,4,8,12,16.

Well in the paper it says "jellyfish gene is attached to the human gene" and "explain the purpose of attaching this gene" along with a picture of them placed side by side, not the human gene with part of the jellyfish gene either side. This definitely makes it sound like the jellyfish gene is intact? But if you're right then I'm not happy with the question lol.

i based my answer on the diagram so i said it allows identification of which cells have taken up the genes because these will fluoresce

for suggest why i wrote that the human gene will be transcripted and translated, the resulting protein will be found in sheep milk

it could be that the two L fragments are the same/similar length so they didn't seperate properly thats what i put for 8biii so i put K as the answer to 8bi because its the longest visible band
In 8bii they say 'the diagram only shows part of the gel' - doesnt this mean that in 8biii the reason why only one band is seen could be either:
    a) the two L fragments are the same length or
    b) the other L fragment was very small and since only part of the gel is shown, the fragment could have travelled lower than the area shown. ?
