is it a problem for me at uni if my parents are convicted? :(
I believe my parents have not been very honest in their dealings with some people, in the sense they owe many people money and cannot afford to pay them back and some of these people come knocking loudly on the door asking for their money, and this affects me. I cannot believe my parents would owe a number of people money and these people calling them liars and thieves. My parents are not convicted but I'm afraid they can be if these people put cases against them.
Now, I must say I have always been aware of the financial situation of my family and have worked hard to obtain a scholarship to come study here (I am from outside EU). My brother insisted he wants to study abroad as well and this is what has led to these things happening over the past year as much money has been spent on him and he just doesnt care and my parents unreasonably wants to keep financing him! I have worked to save money for the household but this has not been sufficient and now I am terrified by these threats.
Do you think this can have an impact on me at Medical school? It will be unfair to judge me as same as my parents when I have tried my best to convince them to make sacrifices and find ways to return all the money they owe asap. I have no criminal record or any other dishonesty record on my name. I have always abided by the law and acted ethically, but I am worried that those people who are unhappy with my parents might in turn inform the UK authorities about this (either uni or embassy) and I might be affected as a result (eg, the uni looks down upon me or simply excludes me or I am not allowed entry)? These bad thoughts keep worrying me, especially since I have worked hard for the past 2 years and I do not want to lose out on my degree

You are not your parents. If your parents committed a crime, why would you be punished for it? The only thing that unis will care about is you and if you are able to pay or not, you say you have a scholorship so you shouldn't worry. The only thing that should be worrying you is your parents, why are they spending so much money on your brother when they have a lot of debt

You are not responsible for your parents. If you have obtained a scholarship on your own merits and have been honest about your parents income ( if it was asked) I cannot see how there is a problem.
I think nearly all of us have skeletons in our cupboard. My father in law was jailed for fraud on a grand scale - his crime, his problem. it has made us ultra honest. -

I understand I am not responsible for what my parents do, and so should not worry about it. I just hope that they become more responsible now, because I care for them. I love them a lot, and I know they too love me a lot.(Original post by squeakysquirrel)

Re: is it a problem for me at uni if my parents are convicted? :(If you can pay your fees, and support yourself without recourse to public funds or working illegally, then UKBA and the university won't care if your parents have been running around murdering people (Gadaffi's son was a student at LSE), or are bankrupt.

Re: is it a problem for me at uni if my parents are convicted? :(Hmm some did lend some money but i dunno the value(Original post by earlysound)
Your best bet is to call the local police these people sound like loan sharks (illegal lenders) people who legally are not allowed to lend large amounts of money.
others provided faulty and dodgy services, fooling my parents. I keep telling my parents to live according to their means! Do not just be conned into paying for something.. People are out there to make money by all means, you should be careful on how you spend.
Yeah. Luckily my parents have always hated violence, so I'm happy on this aspect that they're not even remotely close to how Gadaffi. Their problem is just financial and their careless, ignorant spending. Yeah, I do not work here nor have recourse to public funds, because my scholarship is just enough for me and I do not have time for work anyway. I keep getting worried though seeing how my parents are struggling with money and they are angry with me trying to advise them to get my brother to study back home instead of financing his costly studies abroad and stressing everybody.(Original post by Origami Bullets)

I just hope I will be able to forget all this and focus on my studies only. It seems I might have to take a long break from my parents once uni resumes to avoid getting distracted
I had not been able to revise properly for exams amid anxiety.
