Re: Universities with the highest crime ratesTo be fair in relation to Newcastle, it is regarded on the whole to be one of the safest 'major' cities in the country and the actual Newcastle University campus IIRC is situated closer towards the more affluent area of Newcastle, certainly the back end is quite close to Jesmond. I wouldn't say Newcastle is a discrepancy as it has always consistently been the towards the top end of 'safe' university cities.(Original post by nulli tertius)
Some of the figures look rather dodgy. The data is supposed to record crime rates per thousand in wards within three miles of the main campus.
Wrexham at 10
Northampton at 14
Norwich at 33
Bournemouth at 35
Lincoln at 36
Worcester at 38
Carlisle at 42
Sheffield at 45 and 46
Liverpool at 52 and 58 (but no John Moores)
Newcastle at 65 and 67 -
Re: Universities with the highest crime ratesI accept the point about Newcastle compared with other major cities but I will take a lot of convincing the data is robust in comparison with the towns and cathedral cities I have quoted.(Original post by PVisitors)

Although Wrexham isn't the most attractive place to live, the idea that it is a crime hot spot seems very wide of the mark. -
Re: Universities with the highest crime ratesNewcastle, for a major city, and wider Tyneside, has long had a relatively low crime rate (around the national average - or below average for an urban area) It compares favourably with affluent areas of London such as Kensignton. Sheffield too.(Original post by nulli tertius)

But I suppose we must remember that it is only reported crime, and different forces do record crimes in different ways with a lot of politics involved in them. I wouldn't play much faith in these statistics nor do they convince me that Wrexham has high crime. -
Re: Universities with the highest crime ratesOh fair enough.. I don't do much travelling. I spend all my time in a nice quiet area of kent, little bit boring but at least nobody will 'knife' me. lol to be honest I didn't even know any of those places counted as cities.. My geography isn't great..(Original post by 321zero)
Very much so. Fratton, Southsea, Eastney and Milton are mostly terrace housing full of working class people. The only expensive bit of Portsmouth is Gunwharf and Old Portsmouth which are both absolutely tiny. The only people that live in Gunwharf are not from Portsmouth, mostly foreign students (Russians mainly).
And Portsmouth is one of the, if not the, cheapest place to live on the south coast.
what more can you ask, eh ?
