    Effective medication for migraine relief
Was wondering if anyone has any suggestions of medication to take to relieve migraines? Mine seem to be triggered by the hot/humid weather. Currently suffering from one which I've had since yesterday which is worse today. Ended up going home from work because of it and saw the doctor but she was incredibly rude (asked if I was taking illegal drugs because I looked sad and stressed) and refused to give me anything. Really want to get it sorted out because of work.

Ibuprofen can work sometimes but not always and paracetamol/codeine is useless. Was wondering about Migraleve?

Migraleve is just paracetamol and co-codamol (which is a combination of codeine phosphate and paracetamol). The pink ones (which you take first) also have an antinausea drug in them.

I used to find they helped more than just normal paracetamol, and the anti-nausea bit was good, but if codeine hasn't worked for you it probably won't help. I have to say I've had codeine before and while it was better than otc stuff I'd tried previously, I didn't find it that effective either.

Have you tried aspirin? My doctor prescribed it for me and I thought he was barmy since it sounded ridiculously simple and I assumed since paracetamol and ibuprofen didn't work, neither would aspirin. But actually it's the first thing that's really worked; if I take it right away as soon as I get symptoms I don't have a migraine at all, and if I take it some way in it helps a lot. Otherwise I'd suggest going back and trying to see another doctor; it's hard to find over the counter medication for migraines that aren't just a mixture of usual generic stuff like paracetemol and ibuprofen with an anti-nausea drug thrown in.

In some respects it is a little experimental. When I had my first migraine I took paracetamol and ibuprofen which did nothing. I tried specific migraine tablets which didn't work either. In the end my doctor prescribed me sumotriptan. I think that there are about 9 triptan drugs which can be tried.

Ask your doctor to perscribe you amatriptiline im on 10mg a day for my chronic sciatica and headaches and it works a treat its most common use is as a antidepresant and it will make you drowsy but it blocks the pain

No I haven't actually, that's probably one of the cheapest ideas. Will have a look in Boots tomorrow. Thank you

The doctor I saw today was gonna put me on a triptan drug but she freaked out when I said I have neurological problems and reckons I have shunt failure even though I only have one symptom. She refused to give me it after that.

I can't take amitryptline unfortunately. I've tried the lowest dosage twice and it makes me feel like a zombie

    what a terrible doctor...

also, voltarol = diclofenac sodium I think, which is better if you can get it prescribed because the dose would be higher (50mg vs 25) and you could get an 84 pack or something for the £7.40

how often do you get them?

I know, not going there again, or at least not seeing her!

Good to know. I often need a higher dose as I don't react to smaller doses.

Still trying to work that one out. I've had them for about 3 years and used to only get them on the odd occasion when the weather was warmer but they've been a bit more frequent lately. The last one was for one day 2 weeks ago and this one seems to be a 72-hour one.

Sumatriptan (can be bought otc - immigran recovery, but its cheaper to get 6 on a script than 2 otc) is the only thing that works for mine, just taken when I have an attack.

My DR did prescribe beta blockers as a preventative, but I never took them. I don't like taking anything long term unless I have to... so immigran it is

She was gonna give me Sumatriptan but freaked out when I told her about my disability and refused to give me it, telling me I need to go to A&E immediately when I don't. I'm hoping to get it from someone else. Thanks for your help A lot of people have recommended me it.

For now I've been given paracetamol and codeine from a Boots chemist and I'm gonna try and reduce the humidity in the office with a fan.

what relives my headaches as well as amatriptiline is tramadol but it cant be taken at the maximum doseage or the pain rebounds this is called tramadol headaches. Also the ones down from tramadol that i also found effective are dhydrocodine which is a stronger version of codine combined with diclofenic . My doctor perscribed these for me and i found them to be quite helpful. Dont give up on going to your doctors as there are lots of tablets that they could recomend i had to go back and thourth to mine for a long time to make them take me seriously but they did in the end If your doctor continues to not budge and give you the sumatripan than go see another one . Dont be tempted to buy anything online from abroad o even the uk as these arent made by legal pharmacys and could contain anything. Take care

Thanks No I won't be giving up, I'm either gonna see someone else or register elsewhere. Would never buy medication online unless it was from Boots!

Hey. I've suffered from migraines for years and have found that the only thing that will work for me is Syndol (paracetamol, codeine, caffeine). It's available over the counter.

Where can you get a higher dosage than 200 mg? That's all I've seen in chemists. Do you need to be prescribed it?

    According to this no
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ibuprofen#Dosage

Also ibuprofen is far less toxic than paracetamol mg for mg, though it does say under medical direction but ive never had any probs taking 600mg in one go.

You are right though 600mg is considered 200mg to much for over the counter use.

If you can get a prescription for them beta blockers are great for migraines

I do have a packet of 200mg on me so I could give it a go if necessary.

Won't be getting a prescription for anything if I stay at this surgery I think, particularly if I see this doctor again. Hoping to change to a different one.
