    Deleting TSR account.
Hi, I've been trying to figure out how to delete my student room account. I got it a while ago and just haven't used it. If anyone can help me I'd be grateful.

    Thanks.

It's not possible to delete your account, but we can offer a permanent ban which may help. See here for more details: http://www.thestudentroom.co.uk/show....php?t=1329581

Hi, thanks for the reply. Will that stop the student room emails and keep me safe from any security threats?

    Thanks.

The security issue is very much a one off, but you should still change the password for any accounts elsewhere that use the same password as you use here as a precaution. If banned, you shouldn't receive any emails from TSR. Post a thread in Ask A Moderator if you'd like us to ban your account: http://www.thestudentroom.co.uk/forumdisplay.php?f=266

You guys absolutely need to provide a way for us to be able to delete our accounts. That's not right. Banning doesn't remove all of our information, and the other suggestion in your FAQ section of just 'creating a password we won't remember' is borderline ridiculous. I understand that you feel that the security issue is a one off, but you probably didn't see the initial security breach coming either, so you have to appreciate why your members don't share the same enthusiasm.

Deleting your account wouldn't stop your information being compromised. It's already happened. There's a more fundamental reason why accounts are not deleted - it's because while you only have 3 posts, if I was to delete my account, you'd find that threads would become extremely disjointed and threads I started would disappear altogether, destroying other people's discussion and hard work.

    I've got a possible solution:

Make a new usergroup for "deleted users" where the name, etc. is all hidden yet the posts stay?

Banned users no longer appear in the member list, which goes at least some way towards this.

I'd like to delete my account because of this too. I'm currently trying to delete all accounts for websites I once used.

You may as well advertise "join the student room and we'll hold your email address forever" when we sign up!

Is there no way of you changing this?

Both your password and your registered email address can be changed here: http://www.thestudentroom.co.uk/prof...o=editpassword

Will my old email address be kept somewhere deep in the system though? This also means that I have to faff about and create a new email account... Is there no way of you making an easy system of simply being able to delete accounts, as with any other website?

AFAIK, No, it shouldn't be retained anywhere :nah: I'm afraid that no, for reasons that include what Mad Vlad's explained above, deletion of accounts isn't possible.

Is it not possible like another user mentioned to keep the posts of deleted accounts but instead of having the user name etc. above, have 'deleted account'?

 No, I'm afraid that this isn't something that we can offer.

Is it actually not technically possible or will the site just not do it?

I think that the security breach does raise an interesting issue though, as expressed by mtcheer73. Is there any reason why e-mail addresses and passwords can't be flushed on a permanent banning?

The one issue I can think of is someone wanting to go back on a permanent ban...but I guess you'd just have to tell them that 'permanent' means just that.

Yes it does. To expand, though, TSR runs on a highly-modified version of vBulletin 4, which I believe includes a deletion function. However, this function is entirely unused and to my knowledge untested on TSR, and the admin team have in any case put in place a policy that it is not to be used, following extensive discussions. Certainly, I currently have no ability to delete your account or that of anyone else, and nor does any other moderator.

Ah see, so it could be possible! I didn't mean that you personally would be able to do it, but TSR as a whole possibly could if they looked into it. Thanks for replying.
