Irshad Manji
What do you Muslims on TSR think of Irshad Manji? She's the feminist lesbian Canadian women who is also an outspoken Muslim activist. She's helped organize several events where a woman has lead a mixed gender congregation in prayer as Imam. She's written a book where she says that the qu'ran should not be viewed as the literal and inerrant word of god, but rather as a man made work inspired by god, and that the prophet muhammad was not perfect but made mistakes like everybody else. Does her lifestyle render her a murtad (apostate), or do you view her as still a Muslim?

Re: Irshad ManjiWhy would I care if you think I'm not an ex-Muslim. Oh well, it's not the only irrational belief you hold as a person of faith.(Original post by smithsmith)
You still parading around pretending to be an "ExMuslim", its clearly your just a troll in disguise, when I leave a profile comment about this why do you delete and not refute this?

Re: Irshad ManjiThat's nice to hear. Why do you think so many Muslims are so aggressive and intolerant towards her?(Original post by Luxray)
I'm a muslim and I really respect her especially because there are A LOT of muslims who throw so much aggression towards her. And I do view her as a Muslim but then I'm not the one who should judge her, only God can in the end. -
Re: Irshad ManjiThanks, but as you know, there's really no such thing as "extremist", just good Muslim and bad Muslim. The only extremism that I'm aware of is when people do something excessively (such as fasting for too long etc.), and don't moderate their lifestyle.
I personally wouldn't want that, but if that's how you'd like your daughter to grow up as, then at the very least, despite being deviated, they'd at least be Muslims in the basic sense.Last edited by Perseveranze; 23-06-2012 at 01:42. -

I wikipedia'd and google'd her and didn't find any controversy related things, could you link? -
Re: Irshad ManjiAn extremist Muslim in my view is a Muslim who follows the religion to the t. You know, those people who are up at 3am praying fajr at the mosque, discussing the glorious exploits of the sahaba until 12 then praying yet again towards mecca. They also generally tend to have long, unkept beards and keep their thobes above their knees. I'm sure you've met them at your mosque, if you're a sunni.(Original post by Perseveranze)

What would you do if your daughter came home and said she was a lesbian feminist? I hope you'd be tolerant of her newly found beliefs.(Original post by Perseveranze)

Re: Irshad ManjiYou must be terrible at google if you find any controversy with a promiment Muslim lesbo lol.(Original post by Dhaal_Chawal)

Here's one of the more interesting articles. She described Indonesia as a "tolerant" place where Muslims co-exist peacefully with others lol. When she arrived there to promote her book she was attacked by a mob of extremist Muslims outraged at her writings. -
Re: Irshad ManjiWell she believes the quran was inspired by allah(Original post by Spaz Man)
She's clearly not a Muslim if she doesn't believe the Qur'an is the word of God.
But she does admit there's the possibility of the quran being edited by humans
A quote by her:
What do you think of this quote? Isn't it reasonable?Sorry. That argument just doesn't wash. One can appreciate the Qur'an's inherent worth, as I do, while recognizing that it contains ambiguities, inconsistencies, outright contradictions — and the possibility of human editing. This is not simply a reform-minded Muslim speaking. This is Islamic tradition talking. -
Re: Irshad ManjiThank you for clarifying. She is definitely not a muslim. One of the Six Pillars of Iman (faith) is the belief in the six holy books sent down by God:(Original post by ExMuslim)
Well she believes the quran was inspired by allah
But she does admit there's the possibility of the quran being edited by humans
A quote by her:
What do you think of this quote? Isn't it reasonable?
As-Suhuf of Ibrahim and Musa. (Abraham and Moses)
Az-Zaboor given to Daud (David)
At-Taurat revealed to Musa (Moses)
Al-Injeel revealed to Isa (Jesus)
Al-Qur'an - the final revelation. (Muhammad)
As a requirement for the belief in the Qur'an, one of it's attributes is that it is flawless and untampered with. Therefore since she doesn't believe in this, she is not a Muslim. Simplez. -
Re: Irshad ManjiYou Muslims also believe that the torah and the gospels were sent down by god, right? You say that they have been tampered with and edited, so why do you refuse the possibility of the same happening to the quran? When the quran was originally being compiled into one coherent book by the caliph Umar, there was said to be several different versions and he rather arbitrarily decided which was authentic and which ones were altered and in the process destroyed many other versions of the quran. Me thinks there is a possibility that some editing could have taken place then.(Original post by Spaz Man)
