    M103 - Tax Avoidance Motion
M103 - Tax Avoidance Motion, Labour
The TSR Labour Party believes that the Government should take action against tax avoiders in light of the recent news reports of comedian Jimmy Carr avoiding paying tax by taking part in a tax-avoidance scheme.

Labour, tax avoidance is legal... tax evasion is illegal, you can't do anything to Jimmy Carr or those that take part in tax avoidance.

It's all relative, Rangers tax affairs were tax avoidance until they suddenly weren't.

Hence they make a bill making it illegal? Go back to the drawing board Labour and make a bill.

Obviously I was joking lol. You are corrupt in that you probably use money which is available to you because of tax avoidance.

I think we should ask HMRC if any of their directors in previous jobs, or indeed any of their families, have taken part in tax avoidance schemes.

The wording of the motion is kinda funny. "The TSR Labour Party believes" rather than "This House believes". I'm sure we all think that you guys believe it, so technically everyone should vote aye whatever their own opinion is.

Aye, a bill on this issue will eventually reach the House.

The government can "take action against tax evaders" by vastly simplifying the rules. They're the ones that make the damn tax rules - if people are legally paying less tax than you want them to, change the rules.

If I had enough money to justify using a scheme like Carr's, I would. I'd encourage everyone to, on the grounds that I think tax is too high. That said, if we're changing the rules, I'd rather we had a system that enabled everyone to benefit from lower taxes. Currently, we have a book explaining that tax rules that well over 1,000 pages long. I'd issue a challenge: Put it in 5 pages. See what happens to tax avoidance.

I am happy to declare that the only tax avoidance scheme I have ever participated in is Gift Aid.

I also declare that I have met Jimmy Carr and did not buy him a drink so he could avoid paying beer duty and VAT.

    Bill instead of a motion
Following this, we will create a bill and propose it to the House. We would also like to see the Government taking urgent action on this issue as it affects the budget held in the Treasury. Could the Chancellor or Prime Minister confirm that they will tackle this ever expanding issue?

I apologise for the poor wording of this motion - I will make sure that it is correct if this motion goes to a vote.

    Thank you for your support.
