Winchester University - Your thoughts, opinions and experiences
Hi Folks,
I am beginning to look at Universities for entry in either 2013 or 2014 if I take a gap year, and I keep getting drawn to Winchester University! I am looking to study Psychology in a combined honours with either English Language or Social Care, but I know it's not one of the highest ranked Uni's but neither am I Uni snob.
I'm trying to gauge opinions on the University as I'm looking for somewhere with a small but tight community. Please could you tell me your thoughts, opinions and experiences on Winchester University!
PS. I'm also looking for somewhere with good welfare and support as I suffer from OCD, and if it helps I'm currently studying Biology, Psychology, English Language and Music
Thanks! -
Re: Winchester University - Your thoughts, opinions and experiences
Well I don't go there, but I've been there before and put it as my insurance for History. The University is beautiful! It's honestly the most attractive Uni I've been to, and I've been Oxford before. It's a really small Uni, only around 6000 students in total so loads of the people who go there says it's a really nice community and after a few weeks you practically know everyone. Accomindation is mediocre, nothing special, but it certainly isn't the worst I've ever seen *cough* Brunel *cough*
The town centre is really really nice, all the major shops you would expect in a tightly knit historical town. Primark...HMV...all the major supermarkets etc. But the hills to get to the Uni from town is huge, so be prepared lol and the Uni is literally right next to a hospital so that's always a bonus if you ever find yourself suffering from anything and of course they'll be help for your OCD. There's also a prison opposite the Uni but I doubt you'll be using that

Re: Winchester University - Your thoughts, opinions and experiences
Hey, I went to Winchester in 2009 studying English Lit but dropped out as it wasn't the course for me, saying that the teachers were brilliant and the uni is lovely. I was always scared of getting lost/ not finding my rooms but its small so its easy to fit in and find your way round.
Im going back this septmeber to study childhood youth and community studes

Re: Winchester University - Your thoughts, opinions and experiences
Hi
I'm a current student at Winchester and its an incredibly friendly university. All the lectures and staff are approachable as are the student union. There is plenty of support there for anyone who needs it and its really an enjoyable place to be. The city itself is quiet and and stunning with the cathedral and neighbouring countryside. There is however plenty of nightlife if you know where to look and if you want it a bit busy then southampton is only a few £'s away. The student union has some great nights and it has a friendly and safe environment.
I'm biased I know but I love it! -
Re: Winchester University - Your thoughts, opinions and experiences
I graduated from Winchester uni in 2011 studying psychology. Honestly, the uni is amazing!! I loved my 3 years there and would give anything to go back! Hence why I am applying to do my post graduate course there also! Lovely buildings, brilliant staff, not a massive uni with loads of people which makes it feel very homely! Easy to find your way around and you'll have the most amazing times there

Re: Winchester University - Your thoughts, opinions and experiences
I started in Winchester last September. I agree with everyone else that the town is really pretty and the people are very friendly. Some of the accommodation is quite old and not so nice but they have built three new houses on Burma Road, they should be finished with the last building soon. In that house there should be a gym and a new laundrette too. The lack of laundrettes (now there are only two on the campus) is a downside.
If you want to live off campus there are some nice houses near university that rent to students. I will be living in Stanmore next academic year.
I haven't got much experience on night life from any other UK cities besides Winchester but for me, there are definitely enough pubs in Winchester. If you like dancing, there are only a few places though. Bar3One which is near the catedral is good if you want to dance.
I am also suffering from some health difficulties and have found it very easy to get help from the university. The Student Services people are very helpful and I sent an email to them telling I am struggling with anxiety, I quickly got an appointment to meet up with a wellbeing adviser. You can also get counselling through the university. So if you are worried about how much support the uni can offer, I would definitely recommend Winchester, they won't live you alone if you have problems

Re: Winchester University - Your thoughts, opinions and experiences
I'm coming to the end of my second year at Winchester and I absolutely love it. I study history but I have friends who study Psychology and English and they love it too. The university is pretty, friendly, small but not to small and Student services provide great support for any mental health issues and there is a big drive at the moment for mental health awareness.
