    Nursing student equipment/book lists?
    Hello!

Basically just wondering if anyone has received a list from their university regarding equipment to buy/may need and books to buy or to consider buying to help with the course? Mainly first year as I'm starting in September (2012)

If you are already a nursing student please can you detail what you bought when you started and whether you used it/how important it is and any advice on where to buy them/recommendations

    Thank you!

    Hello,

Though i have not received any instructions from the uni regarding the books, but i have bought a few:
-Fundamentals of Anatomy and Physiology for Student Nurses ,
-Ross and Wilson Anatomy and Physiology in Health and Illness
    -Student nurse handbook,
-“Successful Professional Portfolios for Nursing Students (Transforming Nursing Practice) ”,
    -Bailliere's Nurses Dictionary,
-new guide to medicines and drugs
-The Royal Marsden Hospital Manual of Clinical Nursing Procedures ,
    -“Foundation Clinical Nursing Skills”
    -drug calculations for nurses

Also i have ordered today: “Nurses! Test yourself in Anatomy & Physiology” and “human anatomy colouring book”, as i am currently revising it.

The decisions to buy these books were made based on current nursing students advice and common sense.

    Hope this helps...

Glamorgan hopefully. They are quite expensive books mind. That's why I only got four at the moment. I have the royal marsden clinical procedures, the anatomy and physiology work book and colouring book and one on nursing calculations. All those books came to £90 brand new. I'd advise to definitely get the Ross and wilmots anatomy and physiology book brand new though as there is a code in there that allows you to access additional videos and diagrams ect online. Really useful.

I did have a quick look last night and you are right they are quite pricey but thanks for the advice about the Ross and Wilmots I shall buy that new so I can get online too...

Oh so much money to spend. I'm going to buy some really comfortable shoes when I get the chance too... gotta take care of those feet!

I hate being in lingerance...just want to start the course now - is your offer conditional or unconditional?

Glamorgan is quite a nice university I had an interview there last year for medical sciences really nice labs/resources.

Good point never thought about getting comfy shoes.

I know. I'd just like to know wether it is a definite or not. It was a conditional offer but the only conditions was that I pass a crb and medical check which are all good so fingers crossed it will be a yes lol.

    What about yours?

What branch of nursing are you going to do?

I am almost at the end of my training and I bought various books etc when I started in 2009 and have hardly used them!! The uni library has most of the books which students are told to buy so spending your hard earned money on books in my opinion is not necessary. Just buy yourself a diary, black pens, a fob watch and good quality shoes and you're good to go!!

Nope, no stethoscope needed. Unis have a big supply of stethoscopes when it comes to practicing manual BP and the wards have their own as well.
I assume each uni is different but at Nottingham, in the first year, you have 2 OSCEs (practical exams) one before the first placement which is handwashing and one after which is where you measure and record manual BP and pulse, resps and temp accurately. There are 2 or 3 assignments as well. I can't remember exactly. However, like I mentioned each uni is slightly different

Thanks for the advice! I don't think I'm going to buy a large collection of books maybe perhaps a few and like you said a diary, pens, fob watch and good shoes

    Hello! Long time no speak!

I'm not too bad thank you - yourself?

Yeah I think I might buy that handbook it does look like it would be helpful. I also might just wait until I start university then see what my teachers say about buying books.

Are you all sorted to start now?

Am all sorted, just waiting for my results in August and looking for work to fill my time till then because am so bored. I think you're going to Bournemouth right? If so one of my closest friends is going there as well

I worked in a day centre and it was really really fun. It was challenging sometimes as you'd expect though. Any specific questions?
