NHS Braces or Private..need advise please
Hi there, I have a question regarding dental care? I am 17 years old and not in full time education anymore..I am doing an apprenticeship and go to college once a week...

I had braces when I was 13 and at the end of the treatment got told by the nurse to slowely stop wearing the retainer..i followed her advice and 3/4 years later i am stuck with teeth i had BEFORE the treatment a few years back...back in November 2011 I sent a letter of complaint to the NHS, a case got opened and they were debating on whether or not i should be allowed braces again with the NHS...the outcome was a straight no. They said no because I could not prove the dentist told me to stop wearing the retainer.

I want to know whether I can get help with the cost of the braces as I am only on £2.60 an hour and can not afford the £1,700 price tag braces have...could someone please advise me on what I can do or need to do to get braces? Many thanks...

Well first off.. £2.60? Wow... I had no idea apprenticeship wages were THAT low.. It sounds like the NHS has refused to fund it and I highly doubt you'll get them to budge on it, especially with all the spending cuts at the moment.

My teeth went back as a result of my retainer breaking because it didn't fit properly and now I'm 19 and would really like to get them sorted but it's going to cost thousands. My family can't afford it and I'm not prepared to spend my savings on it because I'd rather use my savings as a safety blanket at uni and hopefully put it towards a car for when I finish. I'm planning on waiting a few years til I've got a decent job before splashing out on cosmetic dental treatment.

If you go to your GP and say you have depression and anxiety from the stress it causes you not being happy and self-concious they might put you on the list for treatment as it will medically be causing you harm. To be honest though a lot of treatments are being turned down, even life saving ones under the new government, because they just can't afford it. They only way to get the treatment you pay taxes for is to unfortunately lie. Or save the money and wait. x

Well the orthodontist usually DOES tell you to stop wearing it - you can't wear it forever! How are you supposed to prove something they verbally said?? Maybe got o your doctor and say it affects your self-esteem and affects your life etc.

You need to fill in a HC1 form. You can get this from the job centre and dentist.

Enrol at your local community college. Even if it's for a course you don't want. That should qualify you. Do enough credit hours to count as full time.

Ah my mistake. I was borderline on needing braces, the NHS wouldn't give me them and I couldn't afford for private. Just learn to love the way you look I say,

That's the apprentice NMW for 19 year olds and under or 19 year old and over who are in their first year of apprenticeship.

I wouldn't bother - adults do get free/subsidised braces full stop, whether they have an HC1 or not.
