Need help about law work experience
Need advice all help appreciated!!
Hi all I need some advice on being a lawyer. First of all here’s a bit about me:
I have just finished my second year of study at Brunel University in Maths and Computing BSc. I have decided for the last year that I want to go into law. Speaking honestly I don’t have great passion for law or any job for that matter apart from teaching which I would like to do when I’m 35+.
Why choose law then?
My family / relatives are not educated except for one cousin (Not really close may I add) whom is a very successful solicitor with a huge practice which he owns with a partner. He told me for years when I was in college to do law and he’ll ‘sort me out’ and that law is the career to be in . But never really acted on it. Now I want to do law I’m dying for his help as I know it’s very hard having a contact and a successful one too thus I know I’m very lucky.
My plans:
I finish university in one year which I’m most likely going to get a 2.1 in my degree at. After working part time for two years I have saved 12,000 to do my law conversion (gdl) after that. From September I will start saving from my part time jobs for the LPC exams which is another 12,000 I believe. This summer I want to do volunteer work this summer for my cousin and then next year while I’m studying my gdl a paid job with my cousin and hopefully after that I will get training contract from once I have completed my lpc.
The questions:
Thank you for reading up to this point I know I have been writing on a bit. So I am nervous as I have not told my cousin about my plans. I’ve been meaning to call him for the last month but I haven’t as I don’t know what to say ( like I said before I am not really close to him). He is the type of guy who will let me I believe but I have to tell him what I would want to do and learn from him while I’m doing volunteer work with him this summer. That is where im stuck as I don’t know what I should say. I don’t want to say filing, telephone calls etc. as I believe if I ask for something more intense he will give it so what should I say? Also I want to bring up the topic of next year ( a paid job with him whilst studying for my gdl) what position should I talk about and what should I say I want to?
So there basically my questions. To summarise:
1. What should I ask to do during my volunteer work to get the maximum benefit in his solicitor firm which will look the best on my CV.
2. (Also i want him to be impressed by the suggestions I put forward.)
3. Also what position should I talk about next year to again get the maximum benefit on my CV? (paralegal position? Is it likely?)
Once again I appreciate everyone reading this and whether you reply or not I wish all who have read this a great future.
