Help on buying £400-£500 laptop?
Hi, I'm looking to spend around £400-£500 on a new laptop. It has to have at least 6GB of RAM and a pretty speedy processor (preferable core series if Intel), can anyone recommend me a decent one that for those specs. Thanks for any help!
I've found these two so far, but seeing as I know absolutely nothing about AMD processors I have no idea which is the best out of the Quad-core AMD A8-3530M processor and a Intel core i5 processor!
SAMSUNG Series 3 NP305V5A 15.6" Laptop - Silver: (£449.99)

HP Pavilion G6-1347sa Laptop: (£435.03)

At the moment i5>AMD A-8
Have a look at this list http://search.laptopsdirect.co.uk/na...aptops/pb/06/0
Look at the Sony, Samsung and Lenovo.
Acer's have heating issues with those range and HP got build issues.
Plus what are you gonna do with it? -
Re: Help on buying £400-£500 laptop?Ahh okay then, they all seem to be around the same spec in that range. Damn build issues :/ are the specifically with that laptop though? okay then wasn't sure as the AMD is quad-core and the i5 is dual core.(Original post by Iqbal007)

I'm not sure, personally I don't believe 4GB is enough, as my 6GB laptop uses close to 3GB idle. And having more can't be bad, a bit more future proof, but many others seem to be happy enough with 4GB.
Just for general use really, but want something decent so that it's going to last at least a couple of years! -
Re: Help on buying £400-£500 laptop? The computer i'm typing this on now has just 1GB of ram which is by far enough to run about 20 tabs on the internet and play music at the same time along with assorted word style documents(Original post by burgergetsbored)

So 4GB is well enough, if youre running 3GB idle you need to ckeck what the **** is eating the ram and get rid of it.

Re: Help on buying £400-£500 laptop?1GB you gotta be joking!! you are running windows right? :P ah I run a lot in the background I have 6GB I don't need to worry! The only downside of 4GB is, you'll most likely be running windows in 32bit which means you'll only be able to use 3.25GB of the 4GB of ram which is a bit annoying. I'd feel better anyway knowing that having that little bit more might give it a bit more life, considering the price difference is so minimal it shouldn't matter anyway!(Original post by Coulson72)

Why would it likely be 32bit? Most new computers now are 64bit, specially if they have 4GB+ RAM. -
Re: Help on buying £400-£500 laptop?ah just looked and it seems most 4GB laptops use 64bit now! a mate bought one and it had 32bit on so assumed most did :L 64bit windows uses up more RAM than 32bit mind.(Original post by pratstercs)

anyway back to the main question, anyone know of any laptops fitting the description? -
Re: Help on buying £400-£500 laptop?Well Acer's heating issue is specifically with those ranges, some people have had build issues....HP's is generally, though you can take a risk.(Original post by burgergetsbored)

Check up the performance their i5's do better overall, plus it has 4 threads similar to the AMD quadcore.
Something is wrong with your current laptop, if it's using that much. You can always add on more later. -
Re: Help on buying £400-£500 laptop?
I recommend that you look for one with dedicated graphics rather than intergrated like the HP one you have linked us to (can't see the other link?)
Also to get a better value look for Box Open deals and grade A refurbs maybe? I got a 17 inch samsung 6gb ram/750hdd/core i5 @ 2.67ghz with turbo boost/ 1gb dedicated graphics/ blu ray drive/hd screen for £500, way better value than others at the same spec considering screen size. My budget was only £500 and i wanted a 17 inch and £500 doens't stretch that far for what i wanted.
I got it from Saveonlaptops site, had a few decent open box deals at the time.
Also I would advise to go for asus, lenovo or samsung. HPs are okay but have issues, my last one was a HP and it overheated badly. I would aslo avoid Acer - you may think you are getting good value for your money but they tend to have build quality issues. -
Re: Help on buying £400-£500 laptop?
Ah damn looks like we'll give the HP range a miss then, looks like sony is probably the best bet.
Anetata It's not actually for me, 15" will be big enough, I feel 17" is a bit overkill for something you use on your lap :L I think dedicated graphics are a lot better but seeing as the laptop isn't going to be used for anything graphically intense at all, just browsing, email, skype and general PC things. that is a pretty good deal for £500, although kinda need it soon so don't really have the time waiting for a good open box deal to arise. (will give refurbs a miss).
haha Iqbal007 as I said I have a lot running in the background so that's probably why :P -
Re: Help on buying £400-£500 laptop?Look at the Lenovo at the website I gave you, Lenovo is the best quality along with the white Sony Vaio.(Original post by burgergetsbored)

Re: Help on buying £400-£500 laptop?I have heard lenovos to be pretty solid, doesn't look half bad either. Might recommend that one then! Cheers!(Original post by Iqbal007)
