Repent and believe? Tempted?
It might be that God has been on your case for a while now and you've been thinking about God related topics and you have tried to argue it all away but it nags at you and you can't quite dismiss God.
Have you ever tried following Jesus... you can stop if you don't like it you know!
It seems to me that many people have dismissed Christianity without ever trying it.
If you are interested in trying it I'd love to advise!
Many thanks,
Matt -

down like that (just because you don't like it ) ? There is a steep price to be
paid for that. Jesus is not a play thing.Last edited by any_name; 23-06-2012 at 22:59. -
Speaking as a liberal, questioning Christian seeking to further understand theology, I can safely say that even if you chose to 'try' being a Christian, your questions will only get more complex. What's wrong with people being agnostic? Faith is so personal, no one should even try to promote one belief over another. Everyone has free will, and should therefore be allowed to exercise it.

Re: Repent and believe? Tempted?Semi serious, it's very much a Pascal's wager scenario. If you're agnostic then there's one side that theoretically you're much better off on. The other one could come with smiting attached.(Original post by JKMoore)

That's such a weak basis for belief though. And God would know (assuming there are the pearly gates and so forth) that that was your only reason for belief, and may choose to punish you anyway. True belief is hard, and there are never really any definitive answers. Maybe different people experience different things, but I was about as ill as a person can be, and came extremely close to dying several times. When my heart stopped, there were no lights from heaven, or a chorus of angels. I didn't see/hear God or Jesus; I was dying and it was merciless. Hence my view on faith is a little different to that of most people, but I still believe.

Re: Repent and believe? Tempted? In that case he's a bit of a ****er isn't he? If someone genuinely wanted to believe and did their best and he'd made them in such a way they couldn't he should take responsibility.(Original post by JKMoore)

I'm just saying that believing purely so that you'll be rewarded in the afterlife doesn't seem good. It's such a selfish thing, when the basis of most religions is selflessness. In saying that, I genuinely don't think a lot of people stake their whole belief system on not going to hell.(Original post by Norton1)

Nah. Atheist's wager:
"Live a good life. If there are gods and they are just, then they will not care how devout you have been, but will welcome you based on the virtues you have lived by. If there are gods, but unjust, then you should not want to worship them. If there are no gods, then you will be gone, but will have lived a noble life that will live on in the memories of your loved ones." -

I was a Christian. And then I read the Bible...
In the hope of keeping him quiet for a few hours Freddy & I have bet Randolph 20[pounds sterling] that he cannot read the whole Bible in a fortnight. It would have been worth it at the price. Unhappily it has not had the result we hoped. He has never read any of it before and is hideously excited; keeps reading quotations aloud `I say I bet you didn't know this came in the Bible "bring down my grey hairs in sorrow to the grave'" or merely slapping his side & chortling `God, isn't God a ****!'Last edited by Norton1; 24-06-2012 at 01:46. -

Belief doesn't have an on/off switch you know.
The amount of religious people that I've come across who believe that faith is a choice in the same way choosing a sweet from a jar is a choice makes me want to pull my hair out; listening to some of the other stuff they have to say makes me want to do much worse to myself. -

Funny how your thread introduces itself with belief in God, then brings Christianity into the picture as if its the only religion which believes in God.
