    Visitors In Catered Halls
I was just wondering about the rules of having people to stay with you for a night to two because I'll be in a catered hall what happens with food? Can they pay for a one off meal or is it best for us to just go for a take away or something?

Some halls check your student ID card (which doubles up as your meal card) for dinner, but don't for breakfast. Like the hall I was in, but then others require you to scan it to purchase all meals I think. Most people often just went away and buy something.

In my halls, they didn't check your University Card at breakfast.

I had my gf at the time over a few times and she'd have a yoghurt, melon, some toast and juice and nobody would bat an eyelid. Not that it would've cost them more than £5 for the whole year anyway.

My hall checked cards at Dinner and Lunch - you'd have to have your student card on the tray to get anything. Even if she knew your face, the crazy dinner lady who served us (if you're assigned to Cripps, watch out for June!) would outright refuse to give us a meal unless we had the card on the tray. This caused major problems when my poor friend had his wallet stolen (so couldn't even buy a new student card as he had no cards or money) as he had to borrow money to get a new card and his prepaid meals! In other halls it was very different and more relaxed, except at lunches when they'd scan the cards to remove the accredited balance.

When I had my boyfriend to stay, we'd either go over to the Portland Building for breakfast or order in takeaway in the evenings.

Haha oh dear, I'm in Cripps! Thanks for the warning.
