    Philosophy Book for Beginner?
    Hi guys,

I am going to take a Philosophy course in Postgraduate level. This will be a completely detour from my Finance course in undergraduate.

I just want to ask if you guys know any good book about philosophy for beginner? (a kind of complete general book about most of the topics in philosophy?)

    Thanks in advance.

It's been a while since you posted and nobody's replied yet...maybe you should check out MarkedbyTeachers.com, TSR's sister site. It has the largest library of essays in the UK.

They've got over 181,000+ coursework, essays, homeworks etc.. all written by GCSE, A Level, University and IB students across all topics. You get access either by publishing some of your own work, or paying £4.99 for a month's access. Both ways give you unlimited access to all of the essays.

All their documents are submitted to Turnitin anti-plagiarism software, so it can't be misused, and the site's used by hundreds of thousands of UK teachers and students.

What's more, you can take a look around the site and preview the work absolutely free. Click here to find out more...

I only did AS level philosophy, but used the Michael Lacewing textbook. He's a lecturer in Philosophy at Heythrop and it was a good text book for someone who had never studied philosophy before.

But I think it'd be a good idea to get a grounding in the basic study of philosophy in preperation for reading slightly more advanced books. Enjoy!

Both Think and What Does it All Mean? are good books. After you feel you've had a brief introduction to the subject, you might also appreciate a book that briefly covers all the major philosophers such as Bertrand Russell's History of Western Philosophy. His book tracks the progress of philosophical thought from Thales (c. 585 BC) through to Russell's day in the early 20th century, and explains the philosophical ideas' impacts on culture.

Bertrand Russell's book of Western Philosophy, it has EVERYTHING which is concerned about philosophy and also has the historical background of the time when the philosophers came up with the ideas and outlooks, it is a fantastic read.

Apparently it's great for beginners, and gives a broad spectrum of the subject, without dumbing it down.

EDIT: forget my suggestion, this book seems to be better:

For a good introduction if you don't know much about the philosophers and their ideas, I'd recommend The Philosophy Book. It has large sections on the more important/influential philosophers and short paragraphs on minor philosophers that shouldn't be missed out. The graphics are really good and the book is accessible to be read either all at once or by dipping into different parts.
