Gas, Liquid or Solid
Chemistry discussion, revision, exam and homework help.

It is simply the initial letter in brackets after, or underneath the chemical. E.g (g) for gas, (l) for liquid and (s) for solid.(Original post by ElliotField)
Can someone give me a hand.
I've got Chemistry tomorrow and have always struggled with the state symbols.
How would I know whether or not the stated element is a gas / liquid / solid

Re: Gas, Liquid or SolidSometimes you just have to know. I'm sure you know O2 is a gas.(Original post by ElliotField)

My best advice is read the question for clues. If it says "A black solid forms " (s) or "the the solid dissolves" (aq) then you could work it out.Last edited by KyraBloke; 24-06-2012 at 15:54. -
Re: Gas, Liquid or Solid
Are you doing OCR 21st Century Chemistry? I personally had to remember each type of reaction e.g. precipitate reaction: solution (aq) + solution (aq) -> solid precipitate (s) + solution (aq)
Or try to remember that if the 'thing' contains more than two elements e.g. Copper and Sulphate then it is in a solution (aq).
By the way what do you think of C6 if you are doing 21st Cent? I find yield and purity quite boring.
