Re: Postgraduate Speech and Language Therapy entry 2013There must be postgrad SLT courses in Canada, as you can't practice there without it! In the UK you only need an undergrad degree in it to be registered to practice, so there's a slightly different system of requirements over there.(Original post by d_94)
Hi. Are there Postgraduate Program for Speech and Language Therapy in Canada? And which Universities? Also my sister is nearly finishing Nursing degree and hopes to study Speech and Language Therapy in Canada; is it possible?
It's called Speech-Language Pathology in Canada and the USA, and if you take a look at the Canadian Association of SLP and Audiology, it has loads of information about the career and working in Canada.
There are 9 universities in Canada that offer the masters program; the list is here.
Hope that helps.

Re: Postgraduate Speech and Language Therapy entry 2013I deferred my entry as did a lot of people, but I didn't apply for deferred entry, I just deferred it when I got the offer. I'd ring them to check but it wasn't a problem at all.(Original post by Kat86)
Its nice to know we're all in the same boat anyway!
I missed the UCL open day last week, was it interesting? did they have any advice, tips? any other books or anything? Do you guys know if there are any other open days coming up, or are they all in the new academic year now?
Also, bit random, do you know if any of the uni's would accept deferred entry (e.g. applying this year to start Sept 2014?) Just trying to suss out all my options!

Re: Postgraduate Speech and Language Therapy entry 2013
Hi everyone,
Sorry to butt in but I wanted some advice.
I graduated in 2010 with Psychology and have been working in advertising but really want to do speech and language therapy. I was going to apply this year for 2013 accelerated course but the only experience I have is volunteering in schools/mentoring online/volunteering at camps. I am worried that I really haven't got enough experience but don't know where to start.....anyone got any tips?
Thanks -

Hi guys, I'm a current student on the postgrad course happy to answer questions. I like to offer my advice on these threads because I would have loved to have a current student to talk to back when I was applying, so fire away if you need to know anything

I am currently working with adults who have moderate learning disabilities and I am also working as a learning facilitator within a local college supporting students with learning impairment, such as dyslexia, Adhd etc... I want to apply for the post - graduate course in 2013, do you think this will be enough experience?? What kind of experience did you have before you were accepted on the course??
Thanks for any advice. -
Re: Postgraduate Speech and Language Therapy entry 2013
Hi, I am also a current student on the post-grad SLT course (at city). I just wanted to mention because I read all these posts where people panic about having enough experience etc. It really is as much if not MORE about what you learn from the experience you do as how many hours you've clocked up. Part of the reason for demanding so much experience is to ensure you know what you are letting yourself in for - many of the client groups and settings are demanding in many ways. If you have never had experience working with adults with learning disabilities, say, it can be very daunting.
The impression I've always got is that it's really important to take a step back to think about what you are learning and how you can apply what you've seen in different ways and reflect on the experience (the NHS do love a bit of reflection!)
I got onto the postgrad with, compared to what is being listed, extremely minimal experience! I volunteered in a nursery 1 morning a week for 3 months; I went to a stammering workshop for adults at City Lit; I shadowed an SLT in a school for 1 day. My full time job was with mainstream children in an educational setting, and I had some experience from when I was at school of doing stuff with kids including some with disabilities. That's it. I had no experience with stroke. In hindsight I would go back and get that experience before I started because it definitely helps! But in my personal statement I identified this lack and tried to apply what I'd learnt already and I did a lot of reading to be aware of what was involved. I only shadowed the SLT for a day but I called her A LOT while I was doing reading and when doing my application to get her perspective on things.
What I'm trying to say I guess is don't just become fixated on the quantity of experience, it really is about quality and working out what skills you're going to need to be a good SLT and how communication and swallowing needs affect people as a person, not just in your clinic during that session. If you can only get a day shadowing then don't panic, just make the most of it!

Re: Postgraduate Speech and Language Therapy entry 2013Hey. I don't really have much to add to what Flicker said above, that is all great advice!(Original post by thomps)

I don't really like listing my experience on here, because it's just so unique to each person you really can't compare, and I really don't think it's helpful to get hung up on it. Sorry I don't mean to be cryptic; like Flicker I didn't have a massive amount of experience. Nothing to shout about compared to some of the people listing their experience on here! All I want to say is do what you can, do what you enjoy because you will get more out of it, and whilst you're doing it just throw yourself in and get as much out of it as you can. It's all about quality, not quantity.
Also, read around the client groups you are with, find out what is *really* going on for them. You might see a person who has learning disabilities. Great, but as Flicker said, what did you learn from it, how have you changed as a result, what will you do next time you meet a person who has learning disabilities? Just reflect, reflect, reflect and think about how your experiences change you.Last edited by jennifex; 29-08-2012 at 18:32. -

I am currently looking into doing the MSC in speech and language therapy in any uni that will accept really, i think i will apply to all of the them and see what happens. i am currently going into my 3rd year of uni doing education/ early childhood studies. I haven't had alot of experience with SaLT but ive got so much experience working in schools and nurseries and also special needs. Re: Postgraduate Speech and Language Therapy entry 2013
Hi guys. Im planning on applying for the postgraduate course at Essex uni for 2013 - but I have a few questions. I am currently studying English Language and Literature at Essex- anybody know if this will be considered related? Half of my modules are linguistics options and I consistently get better marks in them too. Secondly, I could use a point in the right direction for experience...I tried the stroke association in colchester but unfortunately the two mornings they want volunteers I have lectures. Some other suggestions would be great!

Thanks for the book list elmo!

Currently trying to do my personal statement- it's taking a while! how's yours going? do you know where you're going to apply?
I also need to book the citylit course for october, being ridiculously poor is putting me off slightly but I know it will be really useful & helpful for the application! -

I was wondering if you would be able to tell me if you're able to hold down a job whilst being on the course. I am currently a LSA working with two quite severe SEN children who both need SLT, so I was wondering if you reckon I would be able to hold down some kind of part-time job or if I really need to be saving now lol. Thank you so much!

Postgraduate Speech and Language Therapy entry 2013I'm on the postgrad at city... I had a part time job during my first year at city, anywhere between 4 and 12 hours a week and it was fine, in fact I liked having it to take my mind off the course. In my second year I'm planning to continue with 6 hours a week xxx(Original post by Nikki_Katherine)

Re: Postgraduate Speech and Language Therapy entry 2013Thank you sooooo so much! I can not tell you how helpful this is and how much of a weight has been lifted from me knowing I can hold down a job as well. If it's okay with you, if I think of anymore questions could I possibly bother you again? Thank you!!! Xxx.(Original post by Flicker)
