Re: I want to start making dubtsep - where do I start? Software, equipment etc...It's sort of following the same path that garage did, it's having it's heyday and will die off soon. It seems to have extremes and categories into which the majority of tunes fall into. Although Mala's Cuban-inspired album looks like it might bring something new to the table(Original post by JCC-MGS)
FL Studio. Dubstep is basically dead now tho

Reason 5 is available through the use of a pirate and his bay. If you're going to actually pay, Cubase(pc) or Logic(mac), and unlike reason they have VST support. Also you can get 50% discount on cubase 6 if you're a student.
Have you been on gearslutz? If not have a read through;

It's quite along answer to your question(assuming you want a fairly detailed one), your best bet is to take snippets from more specific questions on;
- Computers
- Interfaces
- Software
- Plugins
- Headphones(don't bother with monitors unless you plan on acoustically treating your room)

Re: I want to start making dubtsep - where do I start? Software, equipment etc...Thanks for the info(Original post by KyraBloke)
Well. I'm going to talk about Midi-based software. These basically work where you can either draw in notes onto the computer or use a Midi-instrument to play the notes normally. On top of this, all of the following softwares allow you to import your own recorded sounds.
Fruity loops. (for pc only)
Ableton
Reason
Cubcase
Logic. (for mac only)
Pro tools.
Do a bit of research on all of these. I use Reason and love it.
All of them are professional. All have their own built in instruments and allow 'external plugins' (third party intruments) Reason has it's own system of this. It's sells the cheapest Plugins, but has the fewest to choose from.
Just quote me for anymore questions. I'll go into alot more depth if you want. Ps i'm biased towards Reason!
Which is the easiest system to use? I've just downloaded a demo of fruityloops. Why do you like reason so much??

Re: I want to start making dubtsep - where do I start? Software, equipment etc...Well, I simply used reason because it was the first google results. I'm just so used to it now and over the last couple of years have learnt alot with it and it does allow you to be very creative.(Original post by lilahnurave)

I can't really comment on easy to learn, Reason i think is easy. But at the same time, you can make it as complex as you want. It emulates hardware and you can interconnect wires at the back.
So for example, you can have a synthesizer making a sound, and you can take the signal and split it into as many as you want, and have each split signal run through a certain device. You can even set it so that signal then tells another device to do a certain action. It can involve a bit of thinking though. But if you have a bit of intelligence you can make some fricken cray sounds - which i guess is ideal for dubstep since all dubstep is is just stupid sounds!
It's a little tricky to explain here if you don't understand alot of the terminology.
So, if i had to sum up reason. You're given the bare basics and given loads of freedom to create anything you can ever dream of. You're only given a few devices, but these allow you with a bit of thinking to emulate anything.
The others, you're given a variety of devices, which are limited. Still pretty fantastic though.
I only wouldn't recommend fruity loops. But this is a bias opinion. I really disliked it. But if you like it thats great. Alot of professionals do use it. More so than Reason to be truthful.Last edited by KyraBloke; 24-06-2012 at 22:41. -

FL studio is only good for getting down a basic idea imo, I'd go with Ableton, it might be harder to get to grips with at first but you can go much further with it. You'll also want a few sample packs and VST synths, Native Instruments 'massive' is great though you'll need a pretty fast machine.

Just wait for the next fad to come along and get in on that earlier.
Regarding DAWs, I've primarily used Cubase for years and despite playing around with Ableton and Pro Tools I've never had any real reason to switch. Asides the fact that everyone has heard of Pro Tools, and it's cooler, or some stupid ****.
FL is ****.Last edited by concubine; 25-06-2012 at 09:59.
