Re: Newly-wed couple who presented petition against gay marriage targeted by trolls
The abuse they're getting is ridiculous! But they should have been prepared for it, trolls have nothing better to do with theirs lives than persecute people- especially when they express views on something as controversial as this! But tbh I don't get why people are even getting votes to say whether gay people can marry or not, being gay doesn't affect anyone and being gay and married doesn't hurt anyone either. I don't see how people have any founded reasons as to why gay people are not allowed to be married- the couple by presenting that petition were simply presenting another form of discrimination and if it were a petition to say that blacks and whites cannot marry or to say that 'Jews and Aryans (take an extreme one from history) ' cannot marry then the whole country would be in uproar!

Re: Newly-wed couple who presented petition against gay marriage targeted by trolls
If they are so intent on sending out a message of hate, they have no business complaining when they receive messages of hate in return.
I don't condone the death threats and things like that though - I think calling them stupid, homophobic etc is acceptable because it's true, but hoping they get cancer and die is just a troll thing to do and most likely not representative of the true feelings of gay people and those who, like me, support their right to get married. -
Re: Newly-wed couple who presented petition against gay marriage targeted by trolls
As a homosexual myself, I am not really all that bothered about this same sex marriage thing because, well, marriage is mainly under religion and I am NOT RELIGIOUS AT ALL. A civil partnership is worth the exact same as a marriage except under personal taste minus the religion.
Although, I find it rather frustrating that we live in times where I am judged on who I do in bed rather than who I am as a person.Last edited by Scienceisgood; 25-06-2012 at 19:48. -
Re: Newly-wed couple who presented petition against gay marriage targeted by trollsI'm embarrassed that the woman has the same name as me.(Original post by (:Becca(:)
I'm embarrassed that these people live in the same area as me.
Back on topic, saying they should become infertile and die of cancer is a bit far, but at the same time I've got absolutely no sympathy for them.
Then again, I'm embarrassed that my name is Esther anyway, so...
I don't like the messages they've received, but I really don't know what they were expecting when they turned up in full wedding gear. IMO that was rather an insensitive thing to do. I can't feel any sympathy for these kinds of people, I really can't.Last edited by Ra Ra Ra; 25-06-2012 at 20:10. -
Re: Newly-wed couple who presented petition against gay marriage targeted by trollsAnd the same to you.(Original post by DYKWIA)
This is terrible that stuff like this happens and it makes me so mad. People need to understand that not everyone shares pro gay views. They have no right to impose their beliefs on homosexuality on others.
I do agree that they have every right to have and express whatever view they want. Expressing said views in such a spiteful and insulting manner however, can only be expected to breed more of the same. It is hard to be sympathetic to someone who delights in insulting you, when you see them being insulted in turn. -
Re: Newly-wed couple who presented petition against gay marriage targeted by trollsThe hate they have received just for expressing their opinion is disgusting. I thought I had it bad being called 'hoomophobic' for my views, but death threats are something else entirely.(Original post by mmmpie)

Expressing opinions that go against gay marriage is hardly insulting anyways. I have no sympathy with those who get offended by someone being against gay marriage. -
Re: Newly-wed couple who presented petition against gay marriage targeted by trolls
surely this is down to the church and other religious groups considering they are the keepers of marriage? The only thing the government do is give money to married couples, which should be scrapped, what's the fuss anyway, why do gays have to get married? If they do it on religious basis as a way of getting into heaven doesn't being gay go against the bible, Quaran etc? I don;t understand the need it seems like people are looking to fight, simply solution remove benefits attached to being married through state intervention, let marriages be dealt with by those who marry, if a member of the church is happy marrying 2 gay people so be it, and how they hell can people compare this to the struggle of the blacks against racism, the two things are like chalk and cheese....

Re: Newly-wed couple who presented petition against gay marriage targeted by trollsI wasn't offended against them being against gay marriage. I was offended by them whipping up a media circus, putting on morning dress and posing as having come directly from the church/registrar/whatever to deliver their petition. That isn't simple expression, that's a calculated insult.(Original post by DYKWIA)

They haven't received death threats, according to Northumbria police. -
Re: Newly-wed couple who presented petition against gay marriage targeted by trollsThey are Christians, they were acting in the name of the Lord. Fair play to the internet community. These people deserve what came to them.(Original post by paniking_and_not_revising)
While they have the right to believe in whatever they want to believe in, I believe nobody has any right to dictate what others should believe in.
And this couple are trying to do that. They have no right to say who can and cannot marry.
Last time I checked, religion didn't have a monopoly on marriage anyway.
And their petition was calling for denying gays their right to get married so in my opinion, they deserve this hate.
I'm not gay but I don't believe I have any right in telling other people how to live their life. -
Re: Newly-wed couple who presented petition against gay marriage targeted by trollsthere were no death threats...it said in the article that the police were unable to take any action because no criminal messages were sent.(Original post by DYKWIA)

Re: Newly-wed couple who presented petition against gay marriage targeted by trollsHe will, most likely, ignore this point and instead tell us how it's just another indication of how gay people are seizing the opportunity to persecute straight people. If we're very lucky, he'll get as far as telling us that legalising same-sex marriage would compromise his personal safety - apparently that's already under threat by seeing gay couples holding hands in public.(Original post by lolipanda)

Re: Newly-wed couple who presented petition against gay marriage targeted by trolls
I do believe in gay marriage, but harassing them on the internet now makrs pro-marriage equality supporters look slightly immature. How is gay marriage meant to be legalised if we can't fight back sensibly? I disagree with the petition, but some stupid death threats aren't going to change the couple's feelings. The response should have been make a bigger petition for gay marriage, I bet it'd get more than 550,000

Re: Newly-wed couple who presented petition against gay marriage targeted by trolls
I think they deserve it TBH. They invited that sort of thing when they donned those outfits to pose in front of Downing Street and say "look we're married, but we want to see to it that gay people can't be". They were looking to cause trouble, and I'm glad they got it.

Re: Newly-wed couple who presented petition against gay marriage targeted by trollsSee, this is exactly why I don't understand the need for gay marriage, I'm all for equal rights, but as far I as I can see a civil partnership gives those rights. However, any time that opinion gets raised, the immediate response is to brand me as homophobic, which is stupid reaction really. To be honest, I'm just frustrated that it's even blown up to be such a big issue, why can't we all just live and let live and get on with worrying about more important stuff?(Original post by Scienceisgood)

But the worst thing is, I don't think he's trolling...
