    A-level choices for top 6?
is this acceptable as a-level choices to study maths at a top 6 uni?

    maths
    further maths
    economics
    I.T (4th, dropped after AS)

    for my brother.

it is fine, thought IT is not quite a good one, try physics

Should be - first three are all very strong subjects, IT can sometimes be on blacklists but seeing as it is only being taken as a fourth subject it shouldnt affect the application

maybe change the IT to chemistry or physics or business but preferable chemistry and physics.

I'd very strongly suggest taking Physics instead of ICT. The top unis will almost certainly ignore it completely. If he's applying for Maths then he should have no problems with Maths/FMaths being counted as seperate subjects (I'm not sure which unis this would actually apply to, but nevertheless...). The main three are relatively decent subjects to be taking, so as long as he has good grades he should be alright.

You might want to check that the unis dont count maths and further maths as one a level. I know some do. He may want to do another subject so make it more well rounded as economics and maths on the same wave length. Also, if he changes his mind about maths, he might close some doors by only doing maths and economics

thanks for your opinion guys. i just saw the Cambridge blacklist and it said the blacklisted subjects are acceptable as fourths.

i might get him to change I.T to computing when he starts AS, that way his fourth is only a B-list subject.

    cheers

You are wrong. Maths and FM are ideal subjects for an aspiring maths candidate at any university in the country. The more maths the better.

I recommend you read the russell group guide 'informed choices' on the rg website.

Most people I know have done further maths as a 5th subject, as lots of places don't count both maths.

No. Im not saying don't do further maths. Im saying to another subject apart from economies at a2. Ill get a link up tomorrow but i know of universities which would want another subject.

Well you said "He may want to do another subject so make it more well rounded as economics and maths on the same wave length".

Surely for studying maths at university, that wouldn't be a problem?

Just thinking of if he changed his mind about maths then he would be stuck with limiting subjects

You specifically said that some universities count maths and FM as one subject, which is wrong.

I was going to do those same subjects, but changed I.T. to Physics in the interview, having done very little of it before.

It's a much better subject reflecting back (I've just finished AS) and a useful, but not essential, subject if your brother
wants to do maths at uni

If you're going for the top 6, then subject choice is much less relevant, as most of the top unis have rigorous admissions tests which are better indicators of mathematical ability. Warwick and Cambridge will ask you to sit the STEP exam and Oxford will want you to sit the MAT. Imperial would prefer to see A*A* in maths and further maths. In most cases it's these tests that will determine whether you gain a place at the aforementioned universities (so long as you have maths and further maths that is).
