Reduce file size
Im applying for jobs online and to my great annoyance all job websites only allow you to upload documents to their webpages, never send them by email. So they have restrictions as to how large the documents may be.
I have to reduce the size but don t know how? And please do not say compress, I have tried it but the reduction is minimal. -
Re: Reduce file sizeWord document. pdf is also accepted, but if I convert to that it gets larger.(Original post by masterofpuppets)
What type of file are the documents you need to upload? E.g .doc / .jpg etc? -
Re: Reduce file sizeWhat is the current file size, and the maximum allowed by the sites? Does sound like you may have some reasonably high-rez images included but that's only speculation, maybe you could reduce the dimensions rather than the quality, but it really does depend on the current size and the max allowed.(Original post by Millie228)

Except, when it says "select the Apply to selected pictures only check box", don't select the box.
Save this document with a different name, because otherwise you're stuck with lo-res images if you want to make them larger later.
I can't think of what it is other than images that's making a large filesize.
Additionally, if you convert to PDF there should be something somewhere that lets you choose quality/compression. If there's a "for web" rather than "for print", select for web and that should help.Last edited by A.J10; 24-06-2012 at 21:05. -

Re: Reduce file sizeI honestly can't help you, I don't even have word installed right now, and on my windows partition I'm still on office 2003, so I can't walk you through it. Try googling to make sure you're looking at the right page for the right version you have. I just googled "word compress image".(Original post by Millie228)

This reduces them to 1/10th of their size. -

Re: Reduce file sizeDo you have any images in this file?(Original post by Millie228)
Nothing is working
It only goes down to 624 kb and it has to be under 500kb. I hate job websites, why can't they just provide an email...

My recommendation would be to copy the text, paste it into wordpad and then create a new document in Word and copy it back. Fix the formatting and then save. -
Re: Reduce file sizeOuch, that's not a nice limit.(Original post by Millie228)

Do you actually need the images? I assume you've compressed them in word...
You can use GIMP to compress them, literally open a picture and go file > export, select jpg and slide the quality down. Seems like overkill though.
Also, maybe there's some extra data hanging around (autosaves and the like), try copy and pasting everything to a new document and save that.Last edited by A.J10; 24-06-2012 at 22:35. -

I have one little image on my CV, which I have downsized as best I can. I have copied text and moved to a new document, but it's not changing the size.
I think my best bet is to search for the ads in other webpages which provide better uploading limits, because employers sometimes advertise on several webpages at the same time... -

I refuse to believe that a CV and covering letter combined into one word document will come to more than 100 KB. Indeed I just double checked my own CV and covering letter documents and it came to 76 KB in total.
It sounds like you're doing something really wrong with your CV for the file size to be so high. As a young person your CV should not exceed more than 2 pages maximum, there's simply no need for it. Your may also permit yourself a page for the covering letter. If it's longer than that you need to tailor it more and work on formatting. Likewise I'd consider ditching the image. You don't need images on your CV anyway, especially if they're pushing you over the file size limit. Half the time they just look tacky and unprofessional.
Have you had someone look over and check your CV? Getting a second opinion to see where you've gone wrong could prove invaluable. The answer isn't to ditch certain job sites because you don't like their perfectly valid restrictions, the answer is to find out what you're doing wrong because clearly the sites are perfectly adequate for other job hunters.

Re: Reduce file size
What on earth is in your CV so that it goes over these limits? My CV is 123kb, I think an option maybe be to just submit plain text CV - I have a plain text CV which is 4kb haha.
As said above, my CV is a page long and has got me through to assessment centres with the likes of RBS, E&Y and PwC You dont need to fill it with every single job youve done and chat a load of nonsense about it; only include stuff which is relevant.
