Russel Group Uni Applicants - The Extras
I've just finished my GCSEs and will be spending the next two years doing A Levels - I want to be applying for RUSSEL GROUP universities, possibly even Oxbridge (depending on the next 12 months, results etc).

What I want to know is what should I be doing aside from my A Levels to make me a more acceptable/likeable candidate? I've done some charity work in India and am working on my Silver D of E (will do Gold next year) but WHAT ELSE SHOULD I BE DOING OVER THE NEXT 18 MONTHS TO MAKE ME STAND OUT FROM OTHER APPLICANTS???

A Level choices - Chemistry, Maths, German, English Literature and History.
(Probably won't go on to read Chemistry/Maths - just enjoy them. Most likely to study History, Literature or German at uni. GCSE predictions 7 A*s and 4 As - but will probs end up with 1 B rattling around somewhere :/ (3 A*s already achieved)

You have a good choice of A levels

Do things that relate to your chosen area of study ... demonstrating a genuine interest

I think you mean Russel GROUP... lots and lots of reading around the subject you want to study, also plenty of relevant work experience. Most of all, DON'T under any circumstances let yourself become a geek at that subject, keep up plenty of co-curriculars to broaden your interests and give you a more well rounded personality. Also, for Oxbridge anyway, practice your critical thinking skills

For Russel Group I think you just need to do a little bit of reading and develop your own specific interest which you bring across in your statement, I am a history applicant I talked about the Atlee Government.

I didn't put much extra curricular into my application. Aslong as you get the grades you should do fine just show that are competent .

Whatever you do don't get overworked up about the need to have the personality, the extra curricular and all the knowledge. Just be keen and yourself.

Sure for Oxbridge it is very different mind.

Your overuse of BOLD text is extremely ANNOYING.

Be sure to mention that you'd like to attend a Russell Brand university in your interviews. They will surely accept you.

Forget work experience and sports and all that stuff. Well, don't forget it, but don't make it a priority. The people who get into the top universities are predominately academics, but rounded enough to be interesting and likeable (they might play a sport and have a hobby or two). The main focus is on academic what-nots.
For Maths and Chemistry, try going to lectures in London.
For German, find a book to read, maybe learn a little of another language.

It's all about demonstrating interest not only in your subject, but in learning itself.

honestly I got 5, or is it 4? I'm not sure if Lancaster counts, offers from Russell Groups and the only extra stuff I had was Bronze D of E, Ballroom and Latin dancing to a Gold grade and this lecture I went to on Psychology at UCLAN, so I dont think it's that important, just read round your subject and maybe attend some days or lectures on that subject too
however for Oxbridge I can't help you I didn't apply there

Start writing your personal statement over the summer between AS and A2 (says she who left it till november). Nothing beats a well thought out, well written personal statement and I would only do a couple of hobby type things - you won't have time to write about many as they shouldn't be your main focus. Regarding the ones you do write about it, bare in mind they're not that interested in what you did but how you reflect upon your experiences.

69% of our graduates are in employment six months after graduation. The degree includes modules in business studies, and career opportunities involve dealing, pimping, prostitution and (with postgraduate study), drug trafficking.
