Ignore them, people who dont do it dont know how much of an achievement that is.

I do, my dad bred her before i was born so we grew up together and now he has given up riding i have her. She is a 16.1 hanovarian x anglo arab mare called Danny. Shes 23 but acts like a 5 year old sometimes, love her to bits.

Before that had various ponies who i showjumped locally, was just starting to get good and win competitions, been invited to some big shows (Hickstead among them) by my schools pony club when they sold my ponies and my trailer. Was absolutely gutting. I think they were worried I wasnt concentrating on my studies enough. I would have loved to show jump professionally though.
Still got Danny and always will , my parents would never sell her

I think your pretty brave to event, cross country has always intimmidated me just a little Where are you next competing?

thankyou so much its nice to have one friend here :P ! Oh my god no way i did the hickstead schools teams too waht year did you do it in? i went to the derby meet a few weekends ago too! oww that must have been heartbreaking my mums got a horse and is quite into it so ive been blessed that when i did my a levels she helpd me out.

Haha i bet he acts like a 5 year old he sounds lovely ! ive had william since i was 11 and he came from a rescue home, he was beaten hadnt been fed it was awful, he is still terrified of men but hes come on so much hes doing his first be100 soon and my youngerster herbie a nutty warmblood!

Well everything been bloody cancelled due to the rain, theres burnham beeches BE in august that I want to take them all to but it just depends on the weather this seasons been a wash out !

No, it shouldn't be there :banghead:

What a fantastic argument constructed there....

The average speed of a cyclist on the road is around 20mph, in a built up area, this is easily fast enough to keep up with cars, and not cause a problem. It's also easier to overtake cyclists. Walkers walk on the pavement, or so far into the side of the road that they don't cause any harm.

Horses trot at around 5-12 MPH depending on the size, not much slower , and wherever possible horse owners should get as far over as possible too. But as a driver, I find cyclist a much bigger pain in the butt because they go faster and I have to go faster and it takes longer to overtake them, a minutes patience with a horse and I can pass it at a slower speed and safer and the process takes far quicker.
The slower something is going the easier it is to overtake.

I know plenty of people who's mummy and daddy have bought them a pony despite having no prior experience/common sense. You're assuming a lot in that statement.

Some people, not everyone. And that pony was most likely a very very safe one with more sense than the rider. Also most people walk by roads, bike down roads before the age of 12 so know how to react and behave.

Because an idiot walking would blatantly be causing as much of an obstruction as an idiot on a horse?
Well I know you're a horse wonderwoman but you can't assume that everyone is, see above post.
And also, as a horse is an animal, there is no way one can ever be 'bomb proof'

Haha trust me, ive known a few ponies that never spooked ant anything. One lived beside an airfield and a motorway so got used to planes, the lot

I understand this, but I still think there should be some law that should prevent stupid people from riding on major roads.
And how would that be enforced? And how would horses get to these places to ride? They cant exactly stay in the stable all day. Also what is a busy road to one horse and rider isnt to another, matter of perspective.

The fact we dont have laws like that must indicate that means that there arent enough accidents and casualties caused to need one.

I didn't get to go they wouldn't drive me there . Yeah my parents still check on Dan for me sometimes but they dont ride.
Congrats with William! That sounds like such a step forward! Must be so rewarding for you They both sound great.

Cant believe Gatcombe cancelled as well as Badminton Absolutely ridiculous. Hope the weather stays nice for you, there isnt much thats worse than cross country on extremely slippery ground

Im not 'boastful' as im 99% sure non horsey people understand what 3 day eventing is,the reason i stated about my horses is that I got negged for saying I love them and ride as if its a NEGATIVE thing,it was a reply to whoever negged me, it wasnt supposed to be in a boastful way.

Ive been around horses since I was 3 years old, I am up at 5am every morning before work to ride, muck out im at the yard till8p, every night and I love it, My response was to the person who negged my hobby without validated reason, theres no need to be rude about it
I'm very very happy for you and I am extremely impressed by your achievements...

You were not negged because you loved your horses, you were negged because the purpose of the thread was to discover why women like horses. The OP did not ask for boasting (which you are continuing on doing now), whether you deem it as or not. Personally I like horses and I think they are amazing animals. You've assumed the people who have negged you are "non-horsey" and that they are hateful for some reason because you are. That is wrong. People have negged you because of your sickening arrogance.

Isn't there a bit of the old " fear of relationships - cynicism/ cowardism - find an animal that cannot object and substitute that for a real relationship with a man ? "

I was more or less coerced into equine sports as a youth and I got very little respect for the run of the mil horse person.

A lot of them are emotional cowards.

So they could ride them naked and simultaneously pleasure themselves.

The law is 'It is established law that horse riders owe a duty of care to other road users. This duty extends to other riders, pedestrians, cyclists and vehicle drivers. With this in mind it is highly recommended that riders take the British Horse Society’s road proficiency test before riding on the road.'

Hear that? You have a duty of care both to your horse and to other road users who don't want your horse getting in the way and slowing the flow of traffic, causing an unnecessary obstruction, etc. It's pretty obvious what a busy road is. There may be some small variation but there is quite a bit of difference between a country road and an A road or dual carriageway going through a town. I don't see too much of a problem with people taking their horses from say one field to another, with a stretch of busy road in the middle, obviously that's necessary. I'm talking about the people, such as those who live near me, who take their horses for strolls down the A48, often groups of two or three girls of around thirteen, taking amongst themselves with no regard to their surroundings, no high vis clothing or straps on the horses, often without a helmet. If people don't have the common sense needed when riding, then they shouldn't have horses, and certainly shouldn't ride them on main roads.

Don't know if it's cause of effect, but I imagine the whole girls and ponies thing comes into it. Nearly every little girl wants a pony. Most don't get one, and many grow out of it, but quite a few keep into horses for ever. Boys on the other hand don't have that thing to draw them in young, unless they have family connections to horses and riding (sadly often hunting). My Little Pony has a lot to answer for.
I wonder when boys stopped being encouraged to like horses. It seems odd that, until recently almost all equestrian activities were completely male dominated in most countries. Now no more than about 5% of riders in the average riding school are male. The only exception is the Household Cavalry. Even police forces tend to attract large numbers of female officers to their mounted divisions. I wonder if it's a matter of boys being deliberately discouraged from taking an interest in horses (especially in urban areas) or just a lack of concern about sexist education of the young that leads to this kind of diversity of interest between girls and boys.

No I dont have a duty of care to people who dont want my horse there and lack the patience to realise the road doesnt belong to cars alone. Causing unnecessary obstruction would be things like standing my horse in the middle of the road, not my horse being spooked by some idiots driving such as someone beeping the horn.
Also pretty sure that horses as well as cyclists and pedestrians have right of way over cars due to being slower moving. Drivers have a duty of care also to these road users as you should know if you ever learn to drive.

And why you judging all horse riders on groups of 13 year olds who dont even have sense to put helmets on (which is illegal anyway if under 16)?

As to the proficiency test do you have any idea how much going to a riding school or pony club to get that done would cost? Not everyone has that kind of money or a horse to go do it on if they are riding someone elses horse.
More to the point, its so similar to the cycling proficiency test (or so i've been told) which people do in primary school that most people know how to behave on the road.
Anyone not doing so is behaving from stupidity not lack of knowledge.

This. I used to love horses when I was a little girl, not just My Little Pony but I used to even enjoy watching racing. I never owned a horse (although I did ask for one for every Christmas and birthday for five years) but I have ridden them a few times. Although I still do like horses, tbh I like most animals, I now much prefer dogs and cats. One of my friends has owned a few horses over the years and she still loves them.

Oh and I love my horses because they each have their own personality, they offer you unrequited love, they never judge you and always trust ytou and the bond I have with them is unbreakable
All I am hearing is 'I have failed to find love amongst my own species - so I settled for this'

No im in a very happy relationship with my long term boyfriend although this is totally irrelevent I just meant that humans judge you can be cruel and their intentions can be doubted with a horse what you see is what you get

While I'm not scared as such I'm a bit apprehensive around them (one of them tried to eat the glove I was wearing when I was a toddler). Though I’m not a big fan I can understand why people might like them. They're strong yet graceful.

love the fact I got negged for being serious about a sport ....
You got negged because a fair amount of TSR members have never felt that attachment to an animal and rather than be mature, accept others are different and move on they assume everyone who is very involved with animals has something wrong with them/ is a crazy cat woman type and therefore deserves a neg. Had the same when I've posted about my dog.
