There are people out there that DO choose a life of benefits.
And where did madders say there wasn't?
She just says she does not understand why you would.

Not everywhere in the country can get litter picked. It's not logical to employ that many people to do one job. Litter pickers' wages get paid from taxes. Understand yes?
So you think that councils would only use the free labour to clean areas that are currently not cleaned?
    Are you really that naive?
Especially in a time where councils are trying to cut costs, why wouldn't a council choose to use free labour instead of paying someone a full time wage?

Nowhere. What kind of question is that?

I personally wouldn't choose it. Don't ask me why people choose to do so.

Then what was the point of you making the comment
Madders did not say that some people don't choose to live on benefits, so I fail to see the relevance of you saying that some people do.

Again, that is what madders was struggling to understand. WHY. So your post was pretty much pointless.

Um... yes, I know... I never said there weren't, I just said I'll never understand the mindset of the people who do :lolwut:

You either have very few comprehension skills or you're determined to argue

Nope. This is simply Tory pandering to their rich, selfish, snobbish core vote.

    The principle? No.

    The current implementation? Yes.

We currently pay perfectly-able individuals for decades to stay at home and do nothing. Every now and then go to an interview and deliberately fail. It needs an overhaul, but the principle needs to remain.

I don't think it should cause too much resentment really, especially when compared to what is in place in several other countries. I certainly prefer the system we have here to the one in the USA, although of course it isn't perfect - I'd prefer one which is over cautious than one which doesn't help everyone who needs it.

Yes. I hate this money for nothing attitude. I live in the North East; it's getting worse. Chav's happy to just take the benefits and drink and smoke all day. Hate it. Hate it. Hate it.

My solution: Get them the f*ck out of the country. I don't need them. The country doesn't need them. They contribute nothing. It's radical but it's the only way.

If a politician so much as breathed a hint of such an idea, there'd be a riot on his/her doorstep.
Furthermore, as much as shipping a large chunk of the population of the UK into the sea sounds "good" at first, it'd lead to massive internal strife and upheaval, which is not desirable.

Population control is a good idea, but the odds of a one-child policy like China's being rolled out across most of the world, or at least Europe (which would be necessary for any real effect to be seen) are next to none.

When you associate the welfare system with the likes of the people who go on Jeremy Kyle then yes it does cause resentment. However as hard as it is to beileve I'm sure not everyone is like that and there are probably very genuine reasons why some need the welfare system. Unlike others who seem to scrounge off it (thats what I don't agree with, if you are physically fit and able to then you should have a job and earn a living like the rest of society)

    Better?

In all seriousness, I am in favour of the idea, we should offer some help to those in society who cannot help themselves (through disability etc.). What I am not in favour of is how it is currently implemented and the size of the welfare system.

Why can't we find a happy medium between the two of them though? I agree with what the welfare system provides to an extent but it's becoming too much now and is far too easily abused.

This forum is full of socialists so I don't think the poll results are going to be representitive of the overall population.

You quoted the sarcastic bit of my post and managed to ignore the part where I wrote "In all seriousness..."? Good job.

Sorry, hard to tell sarcasm on tsr sometimes. Even though you wrote 'in all seriousness' it seemed like an odd thing to write. Oh well.

Actually not even going to comment anymore here as most of you are arrogant benefit advocates who think all rich people are laughing at the poor, and that all rich people need to be hammered with taxes because they are evil mortal enemies.

Good luck promoting the welfare state and justifying our country's ridiculous expenditure. (and I hope most of you understand public sector jobs are financed by the private sector taxpayer because it seemed to be a recurring misunderstanding between many of you).
