crunchy elbow noise when exercising
My elbows usually make a crunchy, sucession-of-cracks noise if I extend my arms, and yesterday I tried some pushups. The crunchy noises were worse and louder, so I stopped after a few. I woke up with parts of my arm sore. I'm not sure if it's a muscle/tendon/whatever, a mass that extends between my elbow and wrist is sore, and my hand is a little stiff
So if I want to continue exercising, what should I do to avoid injuring my arms? I've been told to just ignore the noises, that it's 'normal', but they've scared me a little -
Re: crunchy elbow noise when exercising
My elbow usually does this when I haven't stretched as well as I could, but equally sometimes for a reason I can't pin down, when it does happen it doesn't hurt, at the time or later. If they are causing pain, weakness, soreness, stiffness in the joint, a "grating" sensation between bones, or anything else that's evidently a bad thing to be happening, and it's causing this all the time, go and see a doctor.
Another thing is are you taking any medication where the side effects include anything to do with joints (stiffness, pain etc) if so it might well be that (mine got worse when I was on such medication)
A third thing is how old are you? Joints doing funny things or more normal between 13 and 18 when your growing and changing more rapidly, not strictly normal by any means, but more understandable.
If it isn't causing any long term pain, discomfort or other change, I shouldn't worry too much, but if you want more reassurance then see a doctor

Re: crunchy elbow noise when exercisingIt happens every time I bend my elbow for me, even just a little. It never hurts, except for this one time when I did pushups. I've been told that there's no point going to the doctor, they'll just say it's fine. But I think I'll go anyway, and insist on some tests(Original post by Photox)

you make me laugh OP, please don't bother your GP with this
it is perfectly normal so long as it doesn't cause you pain - the pain you felt the morning after doing pushups was probably normal DOMs (delayed onset muscle soreness) as you hadn't done pushups before or in a while. -
Re: crunchy elbow noise when exercisingIf it was DOMs why was it only in one arm, the clicky one? It did cause some immediate pain that one time, and when I bend it while exercising, it seems. It's not that bad though(Original post by HFerguson)

Anyway, I'm ignoring the noise now, it's only the gas kind of crepitus and not the arthritis kind, but it will start happening all over my body apparently. Oh well, music can mask the noiseLast edited by laprenti; 26-06-2012 at 23:03.
