Atheists, Muslims See Most Bias as Presidential Candidates.
PRINCETON, NJ -- While more than nine in 10 Americans would vote for a presidential candidate who is black, a woman, Catholic, Hispanic, or Jewish, significantly smaller percentages would vote for one who is an atheist (54%) or Muslim (58%). Americans' willingness to vote for a Mormon (80%) or gay or lesbian (68%) candidate falls between these two extremes.

What is it about those atheists that Americans dislike so much?

Re: Atheists, Muslims See Most Bias as Presidential Candidates.
This doesn't surprise me. Still, it's quite sad that in america it is often seen as more acceptable to discriminate and hate atheists because of their beliefs, than say a racial minority. This is why I would only ever go on holiday there. If I had to live there my head would explode after about a year from all the stupidity. It's not everyone, but it's a good proportion.
And if I hear of another row between pig-headed christian nutters and atheists on where to put Boringsville's nativity scene or christmas tree or religious billboard, it'll be one too many. "Their trying to destroy my faith!", give me a break... there is still a LOT of paranoia about atheists over there, perhaps due to the red scare days of the 50's, but I know whenever the topic came up when I was over there and I said I was agnostic (Didn't want to risk saying atheist lest they all freak out), they were shocked and disgusted, like I'd said I was a murderer or something. Or rather the ones who understood what I meant were.Last edited by Squidgyness; 25-06-2012 at 12:59. -
Re: Atheists, Muslims See Most Bias as Presidential Candidates.
It's because they think that they're a nation that was founded on religion. So a lot of them think that god is needed in order for someone to be a trustworthy president. Because mere humans are useless aren't they?
Also, many voters are quite politically apathetic so just vote for whoever their pastor tells them to. That usually ends up being the candidate that follows their religion the closest. -
Re: Atheists, Muslims See Most Bias as Presidential Candidates. If that's the case then Romney is a gonner. Can't see many pastors telling their flock to vote for a mormon.(Original post by chickenonsteroids)

Paranoia.
People feel threatened by atheists because religion has been a huge part of the nation's history. Some people believe that an atheist president would attempt to dismantle religion for the sake of "religious tolerance."
Personally, I'm more surprised that 80% would vote for someone that is a part of what is often labeled as a "cult." -

Well, I can understand if they don't want to put a Muslim anywhere near the high order (given their foreign policies and all), I'd imagine things can get ugly very fast if that happened.
Japanese know all about it.
Well, Atheists don't exactly have the best track record when it comes to respecting religions. I'm sure Soviets, China, Albania and so on are still fresh in some people's minds.(Original post by lindie)

Re: Atheists, Muslims See Most Bias as Presidential Candidates. To be fair atheism isn't a belief people actively participate in as compared to religious people. Thus, that line of reasoning is a bit far fetched.(Original post by Perseveranze)

Given the anti-Islam sentiment in the post 9/11 climate and the salient social views of those in the southern states, I find this very surprising.
