Politics degree or Journalism degree?!?!
I am aiming towards a career in journalism.
Up until recently, I was certain that I was going to take a degree in Politics. This is because of my great interest in the study of politics.
However, it increasingly worries me that a degree in politics will not provide me with the skills relevant to the journalism profession (e.g shorthand), and will leave me out in the cold after graduation.
On the flipside, a degree in politics would leave many more doors open than a somewhat 'narrow' degree in politics.
If anybody on here has any valuable advice I would really appreciate it
Thanks

Re: Politics degree or Journalism degree?!?!
Are they actually proposing to teach you shorthand on a degree course?
I'm not very positive on journalism degrees. I get the impression that what you do on these courses is study and critically evaluate journalism... Unless you want to be a journalist writing about journalism it's not been very useful. You'd be better off studying something people will pay to read about and then becoming a journalist in a related field via work experience/internships or doing an MA in journalism on top of a degree in something else.
Nb I've not done a journalism course, just the impression I've got.
Also tbh, look at the wiki pages of well known journalists, see how many of them did journalism undergraduate compared to some more traditional uni subjects. -

I think that it is generally accepted that to get into journalism you are much better to take a degree in a field that interests you, like journalism, and then try to get as much experience as possible. I think it would be much better for you to study politics and try to get involved with your student paper while you are there.
