Re: The 2013 STEP Prep Thread!Matrices featured in some of the earlier III papers but have since been removed from the specification.(Original post by Stray)
The spec seems to omit matrices. Am I being blind? I'd expected them to be covered in STEP III. -
Re: The 2013 STEP Prep Thread! Thanks Farhan, good to know. (A shame though, so much more interesting than gnarly vector questions!)(Original post by Farhan.Hanif93)

Matrices are not in the spec but there are regularly questions that can be simplified/solved through matrices and linear algebra so they're worth knowing(Original post by Stray)

Re: The 2013 STEP Prep Thread!I remember that question, through all of my prep, I think that is the question I remember best, it used exp form sin and cos in matrices and made such simple transformations!(Original post by Farhan.Hanif93)

Hi everyone.
Anyone know any good books for learning the language of mathematics. What I mean is the different symbols and terminology?
Seems like a broad subject!
Specifically regarding symbols as you say, there's a pretty good Wikipedia article here:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of...atical_symbols
Book-wise Timothy Gowers' A Very Short Introduction to Mathematics is great. Best thing about it is that I think anyone can read it, of (almost) any level (I don't think it would offer a Mathematics graduate much, however) and gain as much or as little as they can from it.
He basically covers the foundations of maths - the stuff you don't think about, that if someone asked why you might say "Well isn't it obvious?!", and they might say "well, explain it to me?" - and you might be rather stuck. -
Re: The 2013 STEP Prep Thread! As above, it's not something you will find in one book. A good starting point would be logic symbols and set notation amongst other things; "A Concise Introduction to Pure Mathematics" by Liebeck is worth a look if you haven't see it already.(Original post by Umairy363)

Re: The 2013 STEP Prep Thread!I wouldn't worry.(Original post by brittanna)
I've only done the trig and differentiation in c3. I haven't got any further than that in terms of core modules
.
Have you applied already or are you a 2013 applicant?(Original post by Dog4444)
Hopefully, I will have to sit STEP's as well.
But, not looking far ahead at the moment, fingers crossed.
Good luck everyone, don't regret not picking Oxford.

Otherwise you'll fail C3 too!

where you thinking of applying?
