transfer files
I bought a new laptop and I would like to transfer the files that are on my old one to the new laptop.
The old one uses Windows XP and the new one Windows 7. So I thought I could just make a backup of the old one and just hit the restore button on the new laptop. My dad thinks this will not work and that I have to transfer everything by hand.
What do you guys think? If I hit the restore button, will it also restore all the windows files? Because obviously I do not want that, just my normal files like music, word documents en e-books and stuff. -
Re: transfer files
Hi,
not entirely sure what you mean by the restore button. If you mean system restore on the xp laptop then this will restore the computers software to an earlier date but leave your documents there. The best way to do this is by getting an external hard drive or a large USB (16gb on Amazon for £8!) Just copy your documents, music, videos, pictures, bookmarks. You will have to reload any software though as you cant copy this across.
Not sure what backup you mean (reply back telling me how you would do this) but in my opinion the best way is to copy it over. -
Re: transfer filesSorry for the late reply. To make sure I get the message, quote me as I have done you. Its probably best to do it manually as I highly doubt it will work with the 2 OS's being so different. Do it manually and make sure you carry everything across.(Original post by Marijketje)
Hi,
Sorry, I was unclear.
I mean the backup and restore center of windows XP. I made a backup to an external drive. And I was wondering if I open the same program on the new laptop and use the restore function if that would work.
Hope this makes it a bit clearer. -
Re: transfer filesIf you got a router, than you can activate the share file usage, have both laptops on and transfer all the files you want over the router. Best to plug into the router for the best speed.(Original post by momanium)

Re: transfer filesThanks, I'll try this. I tried my own idea yesterday, but it only transferred a small part of my files.(Original post by Iqbal007)
