Fairport Convention, Steeleye Span, and the amazing Kate Rusby have to be my favourites, although loads of others (Lucy Ward, Cara Dillon, Seth Lakeman, Show of Hands...) are also fantastic.

So nice to see a folk music thread- having grown up with folk music I am always disappointed when other people have no idea what I'm on about Folk music is so fab to perform too- I sing and it's just lovely to find gorgeous old songs and make them my own .

Bob Dylan is my favourite old-school folk artist - I think he must be one of the most influential people in folk music. I also like more modern folk artists/bands like Jake Bugg, Mumford & Sons etc.

Hmm.. Folk is a very broad genre, most of what has been posted I would consider indie or contemporary folk. Not a dig at all though, I like Laura Marling..

Karine Polwart and Barry Dransfield are what I'm listening to most at the moment. I'd love to go to Cambridge Folk Festival at some point seems to be a good mixture of folkies.

I really love both traditional and contemporary folk, but you're right, it is very broad. I'm currently enjoying Breabach and Circus Envy.

    A FOLK THREAD!

It's very interesting to see people's different take on what Folk is here. 'New' folk, I agree that Laura Marling is talented, as in Bon Iver, Fleet Foxes etc

I'm a folk musician myself and have been brought up on all the old goldies, Steeleye Span, Fairport (Who I have the pleasure of working with a couple of the members soon), Nick Drake who I love to an unhealthy level, and then some more upbeat traditional folk bands such as Mabon.

I also had the pleasure of supporting Jim Moray earlier this year who's a really really talented guy, and a nice man too.

Really nice to see folk being discussed in a student forum.

See, we do listen to stuff beyond club music! ;-) I'm currently studying music at Uni, so get to know a wide variety of different genres. I think folk, and music similar to that description has captured my imagination and inspired me most of all in the past few years. The definition of folk is so wide that it can include so many different genres just within the wider scope. Personally, I am very interested in both traditional and contemporary folk, and have been specialising in studying it on my course.

I think that the good thing about music nowadays is that it has expanded into so many different genres that people can very easily find something that really suits them. For me, that was folk and all it's subgenres, and I would love to pursue a career in something folk music related.

It's very difficult to express just how important it is to me! Being a female singer, I have often found rock to be quite limiting in terms of what I can achieve. Folk has changed that for me.

Wow, I'd love to work with Fairport- when are you working with them and what do you play? I have also been brought up on Fairport and Steeleye- I listen to other music but always return to them; they're just fantastic.

They're fab aren't they! Good to find others who are interested. Sometime next year hopefully, we're in discussions at the moment. I play guitar and sing.

That is one of my favourites too!! But my number one favourite is Creature Fear... I sometimes just listen to it on repeat for hours. It was the first song I learned on guitar because I loved it so much haha

Bruce Springsteen's album Nebraska. Pretty moving stuff.
One of my all time favourite albums, every song is an absolute work of art. Can't really class The Boss as a folk musician though even if he does have two albums (Nebraska & The Ghost of Tom Joad) that would fit the description.

Also the fact that any folk thread has gone six pages without a single mention of Woody Guthrie is frankly, repugnant. He has to be my favourite folk musician and without him, we wouldn't have a lot of the music we have today.

This might interest some people here:

The band are some kind of bridge between folk and folk metal, they're not completely one and have elements of both. Though that particular song is verging more towards the folk. Dat hurdy gurdy (type instrument).

I grew up listening to folk music - it's nice to see some familiar names in here!

Richard Thompson was always one of my favourites, but Fairport Convention, Kate Rusby, Nick Drake and Simon and Garfunkel were also highlights. Then modern folk-ish stuff like Laura Marling, Mumford and Sons, Fleet Foxes, Bon Iver.
