One that springs to mind is Thomas Edison. The reasons are pretty well summed up by The Oatmeal: http://theoatmeal.com/comics/tesla -

Madonna and Michael Jackson. No amount of video posting will change my mind that both are (Madonna) and were (Jackson) great performers. But being a chameleon and performer doesn't mean you can sing necessarily. Aretha Franklin may be an old fashioned stand and sing performer but she can blow them both out of the water vocally

Re: Who do you think the most over rated person in history is and why?I do think that our moral standards were higher than nazi Germany but I also think that morals count for very little during a war on the scale of WW2!(Original post by jumpingjesusholycow)
Wow. You don't think our moral standard should be even a little bit higher than Nazi Germany? :/ -
Re: Who do you think the most over rated person in history is and why?Hmmm. Yes I see your point.(Original post by jumpingjesusholycow)
Really? I think his inventions and discoveries are appropriately attributed to him. It might be a bit of a 'Tesla situation', but I think if he were any more renowned than he already is, you would have placed him in the former category.

Re: Who do you think the most over rated person in history is and why?I agree, he is brilliant but i think its unfair that others have to live in his shadow .(Original post by RichyFrench)
Don't know much about the rest, but Sigmund Freud was a genius. He came up with the 'talking cure' which has literally become the foundation for modern-day psychiatry! -
Re: Who do you think the most over rated person in history is and why?Without the moral high-ground over Nazi Germany, our role in doing what we can to free a population enslaved by fascists is a little pointless. I would argue that morals are even more important in war than they are outside of it. Especially on a scale the size of WWII, when entire populations were being effected.(Original post by rural_boy)

Buy hey, if you think the bombing of Hamburg and Dresden is 'all fine and dandy' because 'that's war' then that's fine by me. I would presume you also don't have a problem with the IRA bombing civilians seen as the Irish Republican caucus has been at war with the British Monarchy since time immemorial.
I will at this point just highlight the scale of CIVILIANS dead in the bombing of Dresden and Hamburg respectively, just so it's a little less easy to dismiss.
CIVILIAN DEATH TOLL:
DRESDEN: 25,000
HAMBURG: 42,600Last edited by jumpingjesusholycow; 26-06-2012 at 12:22. -
Re: Who do you think the most over rated person in history is and why?
Whilst Inman's (The Oatmeal) response contained a few valid points about the Forbes article, it comes across as embittered and juvenile. At least Forbes kept it civil. It's like Inman threw a hissy fit because he couldn't have the sweeties he wanted. I like the Oatmeal, but Inman has really lost it lately with the hero worship and whatnot.

Re: Who do you think the most over rated person in history is and why?well clearly you're the only one who assumes he was a psychiatrist :P(Original post by JammyChoos)
Elvis - I think he was more famous for his clothes/hair than his music (which is not even that great anyway).
William Shakespeare - He was good but definetly over exaggerrated.
Leonardo da Vinci - I've seen better paintings and Im sure Dan Browns 'da vinci code' was the main reason for the hype
Sigmund Freud - His ideas are amazing contributions to psychology but why do people assume he is the ONLY psychologist/psychiatrist. -
Re: Who do you think the most over rated person in history is and why?
Its got to be abraham lincoln, they say he freed the slaves and a true emancipator. He only stopped slavery to level competition in the country as the south had an unfair advantage with loads of slave workers. He proposed shipping them to south america afterwards.
Then he claims to want freedom and self determination for all peoples but represses his own country from seceding?
now hes a hero?

Re: Who do you think the most over rated person in history is and why?I'm sorry? Considering I used those things to explain how Churchill is "the most over rated person in history" then I can't see how you inferred that I "supported" them.(Original post by ak137)

All those things you've mentioned, although correct, are supported by people like you. -
Re: Who do you think the most over rated person in history is and why?yeh, he was. He came out with hit after electrifying hit in the 80s, and his stuff was both so good and so universal that he probably the most talked about living person in the world through most of that decade.
And it wasn't just the music, it was the videos to his songs. Smooth criminal is more like a West End musical than a music video, and the song is timeless. People will still be listening to and watching it (and Bille Jean and Beat It) in 50 years.
