Graphic Design Applicants 2013 Entry
So I thought i'd make a thread to see if anyone else is applying for graphic design, if so where at?
My 5 choices I think I will apply to are:
1) University of Leeds - Graphic Communication Design (my top choice)
2) Northumbria - Graphic Design
3) University of Edinburgh - Graphic Design
4) Nottingham Trent - Graphic Design
5) Leeds Met/Staffordshire - Both graphic design, need to choose one of the two though
When applying you generally don't need a portfolio, however I am going to put links to my online work on my personal statement, anyone else doing this? -
Re: Graphic Design Applicants 2013 Entry
I'm applying for Graphic Design (2013 entry).

Here are the Unis that I'm considering:
- Kingston University: Graphic Design
- University for Southampton: Graphic Arts
- Nottingham Trent University: Graphic Design
- Loughborough University: Graphic Communication
- University of the Arts London (not sure about which specific college yet): Graphic Design
I still need to go on a few more open days before deciding on my final 4. (I'm giving up my 5th spot to Oxford for fine art because I want give it a shot. xD)
All the Unis I'm thinking of applying to, require a portfolio. And many prefer a foundation course as well, which I'm very reluctant to do.

Re: Graphic Design Applicants 2013 EntryOoh Nottingham Trent like me! Most of the ones say you don't need a foundation, Leeds say you don't. But many say it can help you, but I want to go to uni straight away so don't want to do a foundation(Original post by Jullith)

Leeds which is my top choice doesn't require portfolio, they judge it on grades and personal statement!
Have you been doing graphics long? (Do you have any work online?
)

Re: Graphic Design Applicants 2013 EntryUnfortunately I think it might be harder, but I really don't want to do one(Original post by annamolony)
they sound like good unis, I'm looking into some you've chosen swell. You say they prefer foundation course applicants, I'm doing a btec atm, does that make it harder to get in for us without the foundation? -
Re: Graphic Design Applicants 2013 Entryhow come ?(Original post by Dangermoose)
Uni of Leeds for me.
I have a conditional without even having to attend an interview or show work! That was fortunate, I don't even have any at the present! -
Re: Graphic Design Applicants 2013 EntryGuess they focus on A level results more, being a top uni.(Original post by emmily95)

Are you doing a foundation course Emily? -
Re: Graphic Design Applicants 2013 EntryNo I'm not, I really don't want to :/ But if i get no offers I guess I'll have too haha!(Original post by Dangermoose)

Hopefully I will get in off my A Level art + personal statement, leeds don't require portfolio it's just grades and personal statement!
I have work online at www.emilyemilybeth.deviantart.com

What are you planning to get for your A levels? The Leeds entry is BBB but I was offered ABB, I think that's because I'm doing Graphic Products rather than Art.. -

I hope they have a look at it as it says personal statement is important and I will put it on it! And ahh right, yeah in the prospectus it says ABB but at the open day ABB!
I've been doing graphics since I was 11 haha so really want to do graphics as a career

Re: Graphic Design Applicants 2013 EntryI'm going to the Nottingham Trent open day soon, from what I've seen/read the course looks really good.(Original post by emmily95)

I've also heard that Leeds is really good for its graphics, but it's a bit too far from home for me or I would definitely consider it. I don't want to do a foundation either.
I've done about 6 years of digital art of which 3 years included graphics.
Here's my work: (I don't upload my graphics work so it's mainly illustrations)

Re: Graphic Design Applicants 2013 Entry
I am applying to (in this order, I think)
1) Bournemouth (just love it there)
2) Nottingham Trent
3) Norwich
4) Kingston
5) Falmouth
I just finished my A levels though, so i'm doing a foundation course starting september, because I haven't done a massive amount of graphics work, although i've worked at a brand design agency in London. I've been doing mainly fine art, although I do a lot of photography on the side (it's on my flickr - http://www.flickr.com/photos/melissa-gandhi) -
Re: Graphic Design Applicants 2013 EntryI'm going to University of Southampton ( Winchester School of Art ) this september, It looks like a really good place, and in my interview he didn't even mention about a foundation Course. Many of the Universitys I looked at, said about foundation courses, but when i went to open days etc, most say it didn't matter. i think it really depends on the quality of your portfolio.(Original post by Jullith)

What A levels are people applying for doing? I want to apply but I don't do Fine Art...
I'm currently taking fine art, graphic communications, maths and physics. You should look at individual universities, most of them want you to have an art subject but if your portfolio is good enough then they will accept you.
If you're not confident that you can get in because you don't have an art A level, a foundation diploma is always a good option.

Re: Graphic Design Applicants 2013 Entry
Generally, if they don't ask for a portfolio, its not going to be a very good course. Whilst results matter, they need to see your creativity, your talent.
I had a predicted grade of DMM and was reject from Kingston for not having a good enough portfolio and I swear the only reason I got into Norwich was because the interviewer was also from Lancashire.
UCLAN, NUCA and Falmouth are three of the most common industry look to for graduates from my experience.
Its actually easier to get in if you are studying for a BTEC as the structures of the courses are very similar meaning you don't have to do a foundation. Whereas with A-levels a foundation for a creative degree is so vital.
You don't need a fine art a-level to studying graphic design as long as you've done another creative subject or have a portfolio standard that matches that level. A foundation is really easy to get onto. I know a girl who never did a creative subject not even GSCE Art but she loved drawing. She didn't know what to do after her a-levels but then decided she'd like to pursue something where she could use her drawing skills so she spent to next year creating a portfolio and working to fund her foundation and is now doing BA Illustration. -
Re: Graphic Design Applicants 2013 Entry
Hey, I'm hoping to take Graphic Communication in or around the Cardiff area. UWIC Is my main selection. Anyone else thinking of Cardiff Met? If so give us a message, would be nice to get to know a few people before I go. I've picked up Graphic Design AS - and also continuing with Photography A2 which consists of many digital manipulations. I am a photoshop-holic but would greatly accept advice on other graphical applications. Also what are your thoughts on buying a Macbook pro 15" for the workload. I currently have a windows laptop, is the switch worth it? - Ben

Re: Graphic Design Applicants 2013 EntryIf you can easily afford a Mac then switch. Macs do genuinely run Adobe better but I had a Windows laptop for my first year and half my second and the only problem I had was it was really heavy to carry to uni everyday.(Original post by Ben_Walton)
