Young person with a walking stick
    Hey Student Room,

This is, to me that is an unusual question. Seven years ago I had an accident and only recently has it become worse. I dislocated my knee and underwent therapy and was told to exercise my knee.

However the pain has returned and my leg has been giving way and hurting when I walk. Now I know this is a health problem but I was been suggested by my doctor to use a walking aid. I have be given this all black cane which helps but I am only 24 years old. Can a 24 year old use a cane/walking stick without looking weird or unfashionable?

Why are you sacrificing your health for the transient opinion of somebody you do not know and will never see again?

Put yourself in a viewer's perspective: if you saw somebody who looked 24 with a walking stick, how would you react? I would simply assume it is for health reasons (as all walking sticks are); I wouldn't make a negative judgement of the person using it.

I'm not. I'll use it anyway but was just interested in other peoples views on the subject.

I used one for months when I was 17 due to a condition in my knee. People were quite sympathetic actually, started holding doors open and the like.

Admittedly I'd probably look twice, mainly out of curiosity. It is something I would generally associate with older people - but I wouldn't think it strange to see a 24 year old on crutches or in a wheelchair so I don't see how it's any different really?

This is the crux I think.

OK there will be some idiot minority who will think "douchebag" but the majority of people would think there's some medical reason for why you're using a stick. Especially if you're limping or something.

Just use the cane, you need it, it'll help, sod whatever anyone else thinks.

My younger brother (who's 19) was recently really badly hurt in a road accident, and for the time being he has to use crutches or a cane to steady himself while he's walking. He's got a black cane too, walks around pretending he's House and nobody has ever questioned him about it

A walking stick is never going to be fashionable, and I don't think it should be either among people who don't need to use one. But I highly doubt anyone is going to think anything negative about you for using something to aid your walking. If they do, they're completely stupid

Just wear a top hat with that cane and you'll look like a boss.

I'm sure you could get something that doesn't look like an old person's walking stick which would be fine. Plus if you're limping slightly then it's obvious there's a medical reason.

I have this condition. Keep exercising, it really is a pain at times. However, you need to build strength in the leg in other areas apart from the knee.

My wife is Armenian, so the programme is non-negotiable in our house.

On one of those those questions on the law firm applications "talk about a current commercial issue" I did Keeping Up With the Kardashians.
