    Social fact
Just started my 'crime and deviance' topic, at A2 Sociology. Could someone explain to me the definition of a social fact and give an example in a way that doesn't use as many 'fancy' words!! - Understanding what interrelatedness means, is there a difference between this and a social fact, if it could be explained?
    Many thanks!

    Re: Social fact
    social facts is Durkeheim

    durkheim was a positivist

As a positivist he felt you should only study what was observable

He wanted to observe the effects of social processes and insitiutions on individuals.

social facts then are things like the effects of crime and institutions such as the legal system - though he himself didnt look at this, though later functionalists did.

    Trust me, I'm a teacher.....

Hi Chris, just been up the west end, your new book wasn't in any of the big bookshops, looking forward to reading it. Is there much in culture and identity in it? I'm teaching A level communication and culture and there is one, very poor, textbook for it.....

It was supposed tgo be published on 29th June but Amazon (http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/1444177567/955) are saying it hasn't been published yet.

It follows the OCR Spec. so the first Unit is based on socialisation, culture and identity.

    Hodder has an inspection copy:
    http://www.hoddereducation.co.uk/Tit..._Sociology.htm

Alternatively, there's more info. about the various versions (paper, digital and online) here: http://www.sociology.org.uk/ocr_textbook.htm

The AQA culture and identity Unit is more challenging for students (it incorporates work, leisure and consumption) and there's a chapter in the AQA AS text - sample here: http://www.sociology.org.uk/shop_sample_a.htm

Pdf chapter to buy here: http://www.sociology.org.uk/shop_ebooks_as.htm

Cheers Chris. Ever thought of writing a teacher resources edition to accompany the main book?

Yeah, I have thought about it (although I never really got any further than "some PowerPoints").

Then I look at my work schedule and decide that I don't have the time (although that's not to say it's a bad idea).
