You can have a good social life at any university. It all depends on how you act, what you get involved in and how you choose to spend your time. If it's the nightlife you're wanting; do some research on the Internet to find out about what there is to do in each city where your unis are located.

If enjoying the nightlife is your main concern, why not just skip uni and get a job?

With nightlife, a general rule of thumb is 'the closer to the city, and the larger the city, the better'.

For example, Royal Holloway is occasionally criticised for lacking nightlife, because it's in Egham - near the outskirts of London and with Windsor as a main student area. I doubt this is that bad, but compared to the likes of Manchester or Liverpool, it appears inferior.

On balance, though, you'll find that most universities realise that students want a good nightlife and want to enjoy the social side. Student unions run events and all universities set up societies and clubs, so you'll be fine.

People are going to have good and bad social lives at all of those universities. Just because your L6th has been boring don't pick a place solely on the clubs. It's the friends you make at university apart from the chaos of freshers, not the clubs themselves. What are you interested in studying?

Edinburgh has a fairly decent reputation for those subjects (though quite competitive!) and nightlife which definitely caters to the student market and budget. Equally Glasgow (Strathclyde) has a really great scene especially if you're into more alternative stuff. Scotland all the way!

In all seriousness though, I wouldn't base my choice too much on one factor or you'll end up resenting being in the place. Visit before you make a firm choice and remember that it's much better to go somewhere that has a number of favourable aspects because if you choose your uni based on only one thing and it turns out that you hate everything else about you're going to be pretty unhappy.

Since you aren't going for London unis, Bristol has the best mix of prestige/social scene out of your choices

    economics and politics
    Firstly

    a) find a university that offers that course. Most will offer straight economics or politics but I'm not sure how many will offer combined.
    b) visit the universities to see what they're like. Forget about league tables, or take them with a whole pile of salt. never pick a university solely based on league tables. You'll get a more honest view of social life there.
c)Where would you be happiest? Warwick is quite a small campus uni, with most 2nd and 3rd years commuting. Edinburgh is a massive university in a capital city. York and Nottingham are in the middle - campus universities but close enough to cities (UEA, and sussex are campus too). I believe Bristol is more spread out but I'm sure one of their alumni can correct me if I'm wrong
    d) See if what they offer you chimes with your own interests - not just academic but societal as well

    e)????

    f) profit

Based on your course and desire for good social life I'd say Sheffield is a pretty good option. It's fantastic in politics - not too sure about economics but it's generally good in all areas, and has a great night life. You'll generally want a uni that's in or near a city, like Manchester, Nottingham etc.. I'd advise you base your decision on the uni first though over nightlife - look at subject league tables, speak to teachers etc etc.
