84/64 Blood pressure...is that dangerously low?
I am female, 5"9 with a BMI of 17.7
Recently I have had an ear infection and then the flu.
Today I felt dizzy, to start I wasnt that bothered because of having the flu I felt ill anyway...but this felt different. I had something to eat and drank some water (small glass) but still felt dizzy. I took my blood pressure and it was 84/64 with a heart rate of 63 BPM.
I lay down and elevated my feet, and it returned to 105/60 ...which is pretty standard for me. I am in the habit of checking these things episodically as I used to have anorexia ...experienced a few health blips (nothing major) but they keep an extra eye on me at the hospital.
All my bloods and ECG from my last ED appointment came back normal.
I have an appointment with my ED service on Fri and a GP appointment...but I just wondered if any medics or doctors on here, could tell me how low that is? I was concerned that the 2 numbers are so close together...considering the go to number is 120/80?
I rang NHS direct and they said that because I had flu, even though I dont feel like im sweating loads, I do have a temperature so perhaps over my surface area i am losing more water.
Would appreciate any thoughts?
Oh and also can take it too often make it low? Just so I know for future reference. -
Re: 84/64 Blood pressure...is that dangerously low?
It is low, but whether it is dangerously low depends on your situation. It sounds a fair bit below your normal though, and is probably related to your being unwell and dehydrated. The fact that you were symptomatic suggests that it was too low for you.
It's not necessarily anything to worry about, given that you have a precipitant of the flu and that it recovered when you lay down, but it's worth discussing it with your ED service. Are you being totally honest with them/yourself about your food and fluid intake at the moment?
And no, repeatedly checking your BP won't make it lower, but there is no need to do it religiously if you're otherwise feeling well. -

This probably isn't the best place for this sort of discussion tbh, anybody could post any complete nonsense advice without any real expertise.
Just email your GP or something!
Although, I would personally recommend sacrificing a goat to the gods and then rubbing it's bladder on your knees. It works for me every time. -
Re: 84/64 Blood pressure...is that dangerously low?don't you think the last few years of 'OMGZ don't eat salt you'll die' might be making some people eat too little of it(Original post by moya)
because it doesn't make any logical sense, salt does other things to your body than just raising blood pressure, you shouldn't aim to get 120/80 by eating more salt, it's just stupid
and you have no idea how much salt she eats currently -
Re: 84/64 Blood pressure...is that dangerously low?
If you were in hospital, and I was measuring your blood pressure and it came up as that, I'd tell you to drink a good amount of water and go and tell a nurse about it.
Mention it to your doctor, thats the only thing you can do. Just make sure you are getting plenty of fluids and eating enough. -
