Why do you need to come across as tough? And let's be fair pretty much no one cares about whether or not you wear glasses, and if they do they're a moron.
Well I don't want to come across as "tough". It's just something that friends would associate with me and I'm just afraid of what the sudden change might cause.

Well I need to wear glasses and I like how I look in them, but I'm just terrified to wear them in public. I just feel like everyone who walks past me is judging me. I think one of the main reasons is because I usually come across "tough" and "cool" without them as I go to the gym a lot, plus most of my friends are quite "tough" etc. I feel like wearing glasses takes that away from me. I know most people don't care, but as someone walks past me, I just can't make eye contact with them and try to avoid them. I'll even take a longer route just to avoid walking near people! It's awful and I just feel like they're laughing at me inside their heads, even though they're probably not.

I know a solution would be to wear contacts, but I don't want to! I want to overcome this phobia or whatever it is. What can I do to overcome this weird phobia?

Please don't take the piss, serious replies only!
Most people feel like you do, convinced everyone is judging them etc. The trick is to wear them round the house first, then with one close friend, then do short walks out til you get used to it a bit. Then just go out in them and brazen it out. In your head think "I look great" and act relaxed and confident even if you are feeling awful inside. People will think you look cool. It's a weird trick but it works. You only feel insecure because they're new but you'll soon get used to them and so will everyone else, trust me. Channel Johnny Depp while you're out. Good luck, you'll be fine

Since when do they?! I wear glasses, as do most of my family and quite a few friends, why should we feel insecure about wearing glasses?!

What on earth do you think might happen?

That is very solid advice! However, I don't dress like a "typical" glasses wearing person so I think people are judging me because of that as well. Currently i wear "gymmish" clothes, like a hooded jacket, t-shirt and either shorts/tracksuit as I've finished exams now and go to the gym 6 days a week so I feel like wearing glasses with those kind of clothes makes me look like a freak!

Well, we shouldn't feel insecure about lots of things but many of us do. (You're lucky to be more confident! ) All my family wear them but I was initially insecure when I started wearing them because I felt different... a bit like having a very different hair cut when people are used to seeing you looking another way. I love them now and although I wear contacts too sometimes, I feel in a way more comfortable in glasses
