Starting medical school in September- Oxford handbook of clinical sciences
    Hey,
I'm starting medical school in September and was thinking of buying this book: http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/0...d_i=0198528299

Is a newer edition likely to be released by the time I start and if so, is it better for me to wait until I start rather than rushing to buy books now?
    Thanks

Umm...I would say that the Oxford Handbook of Clinical Medicine or Clinical Examination Skills is more important whilst you are at medical school.

    http://www.amazon.co.uk/Handbook-Cli...ref=pd_sim_b_5

    http://www.amazon.co.uk/Handbook-Cli...ref=pd_sim_b_1

Though...the medical sciences book might be helpful in the first year when you are covering the biochemistry and etc.

I would wait until you get a reading list, as this may not be appropriate for first year, or indeed for your course at all.

Definitely wait until you reach medical school and speak to your medic mum/dad who will be your best guide as to what to get for the year. Chances are you'll only need to get a physiology textbook (and maybe an anatomy one too) and the others you can get out of the library.

I personally doubt OHCM will be of much use to you at B'ham until year 3 onwards, by when they will have probably released a new edition.

This is the OHMS though (Medical Sciences - not Clinical Medicine).

It's actually a very useful guide to the basic pre-clinical sciences, covers nearly everything tbh. It's not as detailed as a textbook sure, but it's a decent handbook.

I don't think a new edition will be published soon considering the second edition is itself quite new. But you could always email OUP and check

It's a decent book, I have the first edition. It's really useful for quick reference and looking up little things quickly.

Not that one, it's this one you want: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Handbook-Cli...d_bxgy_b_img_b

and also, you don't want to buy it until year 3 if you are doing a traditional course.

And more importantly don't buy any medical textbooks before you start medical school, you'll proabably waste loads of money on books you don't need

Do all medical schools issue a reading list? Say, at the beginning of freshers so you can buy your essentials before lectures begin? Or is it more that you get told in the lectures, that book X will be useful for reference on the topic?

AFAIK, most of them send you a suggested book list in the welcome pack that you'll get after results day. In almost all cases though, it's not recommended to buy anything until you actually get to uni.

Thank you, think I will email them- that is a good idea I just checked on google but do you happen to know where I can get the email address for OUP from?

Dont bother, there isn't a new one coming any time within the next 2 years.

The Assess and Progress Companion for that handbook is being published this month.

Regardless of your medical school, than handbook is very useful.

If you are on a more integrated course with progress testing, it will not be very useful for first year. but it is very useful for 2nd year.

It covers basic medical sciences quite well and will help you lay a good foundation.

Thanks, I have decided to get the book as people on the graduate course have said it is very good for the graduate course which I am going to start as it encompasses the 1st and 2nd year of the undergraduate course (which we cover in 1 year).

    Thank you!

Having spent a lot of money on books for first year med school I could have done without, my advice is not too. If you need it it will be in the uni library or you will be given access to it online

Every time I came across something tricky which I couldn't find online, I took the lazy option and ordered a copy of a relevant sounding book from amazon (always dead cheap an secon hand) which I thought would help. However first year medicine does not go into enough detail to warrant purchasing essential haematology and hugeee microbiology books for example I just brought loads of random ones like that, just to read one chapter lol,
The only ones I'd buy again are grays anatomy and the 'crash course' books which are really good

DON'T BUY ANY OF THE OXFORD HANDBOOKS UNTIL YOU GET TO B'HAM. I know someone there who said that you get 25% off the Oxford Handbooks if you sign up to the MPS in Freshers week.

Have you sorted your accommodation out yet?
