Would you commute this far for a job?
I live in Didsbury, Manchester, and my job is relocating to Gedling, Nottingham.
This is approx 80 miles each way and I would be relying on trains, the one from manchester to Nottingham takes an hour and a half.
It's a really good job and pays well, but the distance is like, woah.
What would you do? -
Re: Would you commute this far for a job?It does, and it's relevant to my course as well.(Original post by LordBradburn)
If the pay far outweighs the travel costs I'd probably do it -
Re: Would you commute this far for a job?
I personally wouldn't do it, I did a 45 minute commute to Gatwick before and that was bad enough for me.
I do see people commute that far to London so it's not out of the ordinary, I guess it's just up to you whether you want to travel that far and if the job is worth it. You can always look to move closer in the future. -
Re: Would you commute this far for a job? This really.(Original post by biffyclyro27)
not in a million years, 20 miles each way is quite enough thanks. I'd relocate if I were you...
It took me 3-4 hours to go to my previous work place; slept in the bus, in the train, then slept in the train, then the bus again; repeat.
Really stressful :/ -
Re: Would you commute this far for a job? You'd have to get the bus into town (easily 30mins from Dids in mornings and evenings) then get a train to Nottingham and then presumably commute from Nottingham's central station to wherever Gedling is. Door-to-door this would surely be 2-2.5hrs each way.(Original post by crazyunicorn133)

You need to think whether you want to pay a fortune to spend an extra TWENTY FIVE HOURS a week getting to and from work.
If I really liked the job and didn't have too many ties I would move; if I didn't - I would quit, even if it meant the dole. -
Re: Would you commute this far for a job?
Is the total journey from your house to work 1.5 hours, or just part of it?
I'm not sure I could cope commuting everyday for more than 1.5 hours each way, especially when you take into consideration things that may make your journey even longer, like missing/delayed trains/buses, etc.
If you moved house temporarily just for the job, would it be worth it for you in terms of costs and effort? -
Re: Would you commute this far for a job?Yeah, you're right. It's going to be horrible, but I dont really have a choice, I can't go on the dole as i'm an under 25 y/o living in a 1 bed flat, and the govt would only pay £60 in housing benefit, towards my rent which is circa £500.(Original post by Jake22)

*sigh* so much change, I was fine financially and stable until my job fell through, I work for a charity that's now struggling, hence the move. -
Re: Would you commute this far for a job?
I'd say do a dry run. Go in the morning to get there for your usual time. Spend all day in the area, possibly with a friend shopping etc and then leave the usual work leaving time.
If you can handle it, it could be worth it. Especially if it's reallyyyyy good pay, and realllyyyyy good experience and you don't mind killing time. -
Re: Would you commute this far for a job?I'd still pack it in and live in a houseshare/bedsit. Have you not considered moving witht he job to Nottingham? Or looking for other jobs in the meantime?(Original post by crazyunicorn133)

btw - they changed the rules now so that the under 25 rules apply until you are 34 now (unless you have been living in the same place since 1989!) -
Re: Would you commute this far for a job?Really? that's nuts.(Original post by Jake22)

I have started looking for jobs but it's sooo hard to get a job these days, and i've not heard anything back so far.
Thanks for the advice, though! -
Re: Would you commute this far for a job?Yep. Mate of mine lived in a (frankly quite ****ty) one bed flat in Whalley but then had to move back into a house share capped at £59 a week. Pretty crap for a 32 year old since basically - at that money, you have to live with 3 or 4 people - you don't get many rooms in 2 beds for £60 a week.(Original post by crazyunicorn133)
Really? that's nuts. -
Re: Would you commute this far for a job?Can you terminate the lease on your flat early? Or were you planning on staying in it during university? Given that it's only two months away it seems like moving to a bedsit/houseshare or back home if possible would be a reasonable last resort.(Original post by crazyunicorn133)
