Is the university of manchester a safe place to study?
Well according to the list of most dangerous UK universities, UoM is the 3rd most dangerous university in the UK. Even more so than Salford, which surprised me!
What are your thoughts?

Absolutely not, there has been unicorn attacks happening there for years. It's been reported that unicorns are going round attacking and even sexually assaulting students of the university of Manchester. The police in the area can't stop it, if your going there take a gun.

Re: Is the university of manchester a safe place to study? The figures looked at the number of crimes committed within a three mile radius of the university. This includes crimes against non-students, crimes in areas where students have no reason to go, and minor things such as anti-social behaviour, which cannot be regarded as a threat to personal safety.
In the case of Manchester, it includes areas such as Moss Side, Hulme and Salford, where students have no real reason to go. Therefore, it is not a true representation of how 'safe' it is to study at Manchester.
With the exception of a hit-and-run, the only people who I know who have been the victims of crime at Manchester are those who have been burgled whilst living in privately-rented shared houses (as opposed to halls). I'm only aware of one serious assault on a student, and that was widely reported in the media, because it was so rare, and therefore so shocking. Burglary can be scary, yes, but for the most part it can be prevented by basic home security measures (such as locking your front door!!) and they are after your laptop / iPod / phone, rather than hurting you.
I'm yet to feel physically threatened in Manchester, and I don't think that the crime rate is a reason not to come here. -

Re: Is the university of manchester a safe place to study?
I'm with Origami, I've never really felt threatened in Manchester. If I'm tired and on a night out and want to leave early, 90% of the time I will happily walk back through Manchester alone. Whilst I don't condone this sort of behavior, I'm still here! Everywhere has its dodgy parts, even my tiny town in Cornwall, you just have to take standard common sense procedures and avoid the dodgy areas, don't talk to stranger, watch your possessions... straightforward things. Manchester is a large city so there will be crime. In terms of theft most of our landlords whilst visiting houses were honest if there had ever been break ins, and usually it's down to students leaving their large ground floor bay windows wide open with a laptop and an xbox on view, you're asking for it almost really!

Re: Is the university of manchester a safe place to study?
I'll come in manchester the first days of august for the first time in my life so when here in Italy I found someone who was there I try to get information that could be helpful.
This night I've known a guy half scottish/half italian who is born and has lived between Glasgow and Manchester and he ofter come in Manchester to his relatives. He told me that, for his experience, Manchester is dangerous, expecially if you're italian or scottish (immagine him that is both
). He told me that the city is great and the nighlife's awesome and pretty funny but I've to pay attention in pubs and nightclubs because, he said to me, there are many hooligans or violent people and after the 10 PM walking down the street it's not safe expecially for italians that are not really good seen. He also told me that there are some places where it's better don't go (as in every city I think).
Some months ago instead I've met a girl who told me different things, she told me that there are some place unsafe (obviously like in every city) but all the rest it's ok.
Eventually some months ago you guys, on this forum, told me that the city is very safe and has the same threats of every other city.
Actually, I don't know who I have to believe, I immagine I'll find the answer by myself
I just hope that there are few italian haters and that I also could make friendships with english guys and not just with people who come from abroad like me

not wise to wave your flag in random strangers faces after just defeating England in the football though.
A spanish friend got sworn at... But it was because some chav thought he was a muslim. -
I had an exchange student from Italy for the whole year last year during her lower sixth year and she didn't want to leave. She had the best year of her life and is coming back to go to university, so it clearly wasn't a problem for her.(Original post by Shotokhan)

Anyway carnationlilyrose, I think that these kind of situation are different for male because if a chav want to start a fight, he search for a male and not a woman. At least... that's how they do in Italy :-/ -
Re: Is the university of manchester a safe place to study?Yes, I'm sure that's true, but the point I was making was that a 17 year old girl felt free to go out with her friends in Manchester, and girls can feel threatened in a different way to men. I've two sons in their twenties and they lived here all their lives until going away for university and never had any trouble. Don't give off an air of looking for trouble and it probably won't come looking for you.(Original post by Shotokhan)

Re: Is the university of manchester a safe place to study?
I'll just add to what other people have put.
The University has no reason to have a reputation as dangerous, yes Moss Side and Longsight are nearby but why any student would ever need to go to those areas are beyond me. The only things that ever happen around Fallowfield are the occasional burglary, but I don't see why that would be different in any other city, and a fight, which usually is because some male students have got drunk and actively gone looking for one. It's very rare though and if you use common sense and aren't hot headed, you'll be absolutely fine.
If you're a girl on your own (particularly), it may be a good idea to go on buses/taxi if coming from the city centre at night, but really there is nothing to worry about, and nothing that makes manchester any different from any other city. -

Likewise, I've never heard about such hostilities.
I haven't witnessed any xenophobia since I've been here...
I'll just support this comment. I haven't experienced anything against Italians (maybe the occasional comment about how much of numpty Balotelli is but nothing more extreme), or any other nationality/religion/ethnicity, nor have i heard of any homophobia or anything. Students tend to be a pretty liberal bunch... -

I don't know about you guys but ive only been here a year and I've already been robbed five times, I thought about dropping out after the 4th, but I just have to solider on and hope it don't happen again.
Could you share where you were and what happened?
Thanks
