Is my subject choices good for Economics?
-HL-
Math
Chemistry
Bio
German B
-SL-
English A
History
I took 4 HL because German B HL is not really a HL for me, and so I think this would fit great on me. But would this subject course be great for studying Economics (or Business) later on?
p.s. I'm sure that I'll be totally fine with Math HL, and I'm aiming for the top universities like LSE or Oxbridge or other top UK/US unis.
In 10th grade, I got all 7s in these subjects except History (6). Do you think I have any hope to get into LSE or Oxbridge? -
Re: Is my subject choices good for Economics?id say HL maths and economics are a must, and HL business would be a good choice too.(Original post by SPark9625)

Re: Is my subject choices good for Economics?
DO NOT TAKE BUSINESS!
I am in the middle of the diploma and I took Business and Management HL and Econ HL and now I have a conundrum because for some universities ( EX: Warwick, Exeter) Biz and Man, Econ is the same, and they for some really strange reasons treat it as one, and consider it to be overlapping courses. Therefore, it has detrimental effect and makes u less competitive.
Moreover business is so boring in IB. Take Econ only. I think the profile below is great :
Further Maths
Physics HL
Econ HL
Mandarin Ab Initio ( China is growing well, they will need good economists
)
English A1 Literature SL
History SL - -
Re: Is my subject choices good for Economics?Really? I had a conditional offer from Warwick a year ago having taken Econ and Business and Management at HL. Having said that, LSE did reject me solely on that basis too....(Original post by TrysBaldai)

As to OP, I would really see no point in you doing Further Math unless you are super motivated. It doesn't help your mathematical ability in anyway in terms of university economics unless you intend to do a joint honors with mathematics (at LSE for example). Even straight Econ at Cambridge/LSE will not require Further Maths (HL Math will more than cover your foundation). -
Re: Is my subject choices good for Economics?
Thank you guys for your great replies.
To Trysbaldai, aeyurttaser13 and Banishingboredom, the thing with my school is that it does not have these subjects like Economics or Further Maths and so I can't take them. Do you think Oxbridge or LSE people would count that and make an exception?
Also, I chose Bio over Physics because both subjects are all respected in the unis, and I personally found that Bio is easier for me. -
Re: Is my subject choices good for Economics? When applying to Cambridge you have to fill in the SAQ, and you can tell them there that your school didn't offer certain subjects, and they will understand! If you're worried you can get your referee to explain your lack of Economics in your reference, but afaik even top unis (LSE, Oxbridge) don't make Economics compulsary, only Maths is a must. Good luck!(Original post by SPark9625)

Re: Is my subject choices good for Economics?I would go even as far as to say that doing HL Econ in IB made university economics a lot more harder to comprehend because you have to forget some of the models you are taught in macro and micro is completely different.(Original post by bíborcsiga)

are you sure that LSE rejected you only because of this?
I am really interested in this. Because I am super scared of my own future.

Re: Is my subject choices good for Economics?Yup I emailed for admissions feedback and they said my personal statement was "excellent", my grades "more than adequate" and the only thing that let me down was my choice of subjects which whilst was rigorous, was not as difficult as what other applicants offered.(Original post by TrysBaldai)
Hey man,
are you sure that LSE rejected you only because of this?

To add, I had 4 other conditional offers with the same personal statement from Oxford, Warwick, Durham and Nottingham. -
Re: Is my subject choices good for Economics?44 - lost a point in English SL. Once you cross 40, it matters for nothing. Even my Oxford offer only required 39 points.(Original post by SPark9625)
Wow you're good. Could I know your IB grades? -
Re: Is my subject choices good for Economics?Could you check your inbox, please. I would like to ask you something.(Original post by dogmatichurricane)

Thank you in advance. -
Re: Is my subject choices good for Economics?
Don't take Biology HL if you don't need it in the future! It may seem easy but its hard to score and it needs a lot of reading, not really worth it if you are planning to do econ! I would suggest doing math HL chemistry HL german B HL and taking English A1 history and bio SL! Bio SL is quite easy, HL is just another world, you learn a lot more stuff and its boring if you hate to read a lot!

I've also considered that point, and if it is too hard for me, I will move down to SL.
Thank you
