Re: Victoria Halls accomodation & others
    (Original post by Rayith)
Please regard my questions to apply to all of MMU's accommodation halls.

I've looked at all of the accommodations in MMU's website and toured Cambridge and Oxford Halls, I think that Cambridge Hall is unsuitable for me and Oxford is at least decent. Then I saw Victoria Halls in MMU's website and immediately wanted to apply for that accommodation.

I've read in MMU's website that Victoria Halls require 20% payment to secure placement. I've recently submitted my finance application and I am reliant on it to pay for anything regarding my living costs. I don't want to bother my parent about any payment because I want to act and think independently but the required costs is too much for me to pay (provided that I receive an offer). I have no job and I am in the middle of completing my BND course, at the same time I am in a study preparation for university.

If I get an offer, when would they require me to pay the 20% of total year fee? If it is required to be paid immediately then I might bow down and borrow the money from my parent and pay it back later when I receive the loan.

I'd like to know if there any TV socket in either the standard or deluxe rooms. I'll be bringing a 32" TV as a monitor for my desktop computer so I just want to be on the safe side in any case of an inspection for a TV licence. I won't be watching TV programs with it. Should I let them know?

How noisy or quiet is it there? I shower every early morning and a little late before I leave so I don't let my hair dry naturally, instead, I use a hair dryer. I'm a little worried about the noise it will make for my future room mates

    And lastly
I play quite a lot of online games and I am unsure how much I would be limited in my activity.
-What is the highest internet speed connection normally and during peak time? --How much would they limit your internet activity?
-Would it be necessary to to establish a VPN connection?
-Is there a Wi-Fi available for my wireless devices?

Normally I am a social recluse but I want to interact socially in university. The only problem is I'm way too shy.
I live in Victoria now. You HAVE to be able to pay the 20% first rent instalment, regardless of student finance. So if you don't have the funds/aren't willing to borrow off your parents, I suggest that you apply for different accommodation. I think I was given around a week or two after being accepted for the accommodation to pay the rent.

There's no TV sockets in the bedrooms unfortunately. So TV license isn't an issue in that case. Loads of flats also haven't purchased TV license and no one's had a problem. It's not Victoria Hall's responsibility to make you purchase TV license so they won't pressure you to. The give you a few letters at the beginning of the year and that's it.

I wouldn't worry about the noise you might make from hair dryers etc. The bedrooms are fairly soundproof.

I don't know a lot of technical information about the internet connection but what I can tell you is that it is absolutely shocking in most blocks. It was £160 for the year (might be higher next year), and my internet has only started working properly this term, after easter. Before I was barely able to use Facebook, that's how bad it was. The staff are completely useless as well so maybe buying internet on one of those USB sticks is better? You can purchase internet at any point as well so no problem if you find that the USB stick isn't any good and want to use Victoria Hall internet. It's a wireless connection and each person has individual login details. It was originally stated that we could only log onto one device at a time but I frequently log in on my laptop, mobile phone and ipod at the same time and there's no problem.

Also, I think a good way of making friends is just to put yourself out there and try and meet everyone in your block. We arranged pre-drinks and invited everyone in our block and did so every night of freshers and it was a good outcome. Even if people didn't drink alcohol, they came along and everyone socialised and invited other people from other blocks etc.

I chose Oxford Court cos it was close to the centre and all the other halls and it has ensuite and self-catering looked the nicest compared to the others...private halls are too expensive xx

    International Student Accommodation
    Hi,
I am an international student from Australia who is coming to study at MMU in September. Does anyone have any idea of any halls or private halls that offer short contracts (as I will only be there for one (possibly 2) semesters? Any help would be awesome.

    Thank you.

Have you been to look around? I went last Wednesday, and visited Cambridge and Victoria halls.

I put Cambridge as my first choice, because it is close to my campus, near the City itself etc

Well I did go around the campus, but looking at accommodation was one of the advantages of going for me. Although we only went in one room at Camridge, and one room at Victoria, it gave an idea of it all etc..

In no particular order, I've applied for Cambridge, Oxford Court, Briarfields and Cavendish. Good luck with it all.

Stoke's not exactly far, either.. maximum of an hour on the train! Go in and have a look around.. maybe Mill Point will work for you? You are limiting yourself by wanting En Suite though.

    Re: Accomodation help! (All Saints)
A lot of MMU students don't get allocated halls owned by uni, there just aren't enough.
If you have to go for private halls when the time comes, Cosmopolitan on Grafton Street (otherwise known as Nick Everton House) is, in my opinion, the best private hall. I've stayed there for 2 years, the prices are some of the cheapest, they have en-suite single and double options, the en-suite is just like a shower toilet sink pod, but is everything you need. The price is all-inclusive of high speed unlimited download, and all bills. There's also a big shared kitchen and living space. (self catering)
It is a 15-20 minute walk to all saints and john dalton science building, which i presume you'll be in, and just off the main oxford road. There's good student food shopping really close. And about a half hour walk from piccadilly gardens and rail station.

People I know have had good experiences in oxford court. But there are issues friends have had with other hall providers. I have never had an issue, but the staff there are always there and helpful.

Sorry this is long but hope it helps
